When using braided line can i tie it directly to the hook when using roe or is it better to use monofiliment? but when using lures can i just use braided line or same set up as using monofiliment?

Not sure about any else but I always use a leader. For lures or roe. Preferably a much weaker leader so it always breaks at the not. Something like 20 lbs braid to 8 or 10 mono.

Also if you do break off, then theres only 3 or so feet of line in the water not 30ft.

Don't use Braid. lol.

I don't understand why people feel the need to use 10,000lb braid when fishing for salmon and steel.

I use 10lb mono and have broken off only once after catching 200+ salmon, and it broke off at my knot.

As for steel, they can see braid clear as day.. dont spook them and ruin the pools for the rest of us.. heh..

Thanks for the reply , so if i was using a leader would i tie it directly to the braided line or use like those swivel things?

It's not the use of a leader or the knot or the swivel that you should be questioning, it's the braided line, don't use braided line in the rivers, it spooks the fish and I can't tell you how many times i've lost a fish because it got caught in someone's discarded BRAIDED line

most of the guys that fish steelhead use hi visibility lines and have good results.

I use Fireline crystal with a shot line and do not run into problems.
14 lb Fireline Crystal and 6 lb shot line to 4-6lb leader.
Hooksets are instant and the line does not soak up any water. Fished thru the winter without any freeze up.
Have not lost a float in a while
I know a lot of guys using braided line with the above set up.

Do you usually spool a 150yd spool onto mono backing?

And with regards to shot lines + leaders...do you need to attach both with micro swivels?

I've never used a shot line, what are the benefits? It seems like adjustments would be more time consuming at the creek.

Can't wait for the bows...
