Buying worms in bulk

They come in flats of 500. You used to be able to get them for around 30 bucks but with the extremely dry summer we had prices went up. I was quoted anywhere from $45-90 for a flat. I had a bunch of stuff that I found via google but I have lost that info now. One place I remember is Pangonis which is right in toronto. I ended up just buying it from my local tackle shop for $60 bucks which I thought was a darn good deal seeing what the quotes were that I was getting directly from the source.

Stocking up for the upcoming winter? Where do you plan to use all them worms?.....lol. If you're going ice fishing, not sure wormcicles will catch anything........lol. You got to find a supplier but they sell them 500 or 1000 at a time. When you buy that many if you don't store them properly they'll die.

If you are steelheading 500 worms may go a lot faster than you think. I went through at least 5 dozen in two days this past weekend, at regular prices that would have cost me 15 bucks and at bulk prices it cost me 7 bucks. Not only that I also don’t have to scramble around every Friday after work trying to buy the worms that I need for the weekend.

If there are other guys on the forum who buy worms in bulk I am curious to know how you store them in the winter. Mine are currently taking up the entire bottom shelf of the fridge and my GF isnt exactly happy about that lol. Im wondering if I can keep them in the garage, how low can the temp go before they freeze and die?

Jeff I PM'd you about splitting the worms.

I'm also curious as to the best way to store them. I have the fridge space, but it'll be more convenient in the garage this winter. Possibly, I can take temperature measurements of my garage on the wall near my house and see if it ever freezes.

If you have a cold room they might be ok in there. But it's all going to depend on how cold this winter gets. I would get one of those tote/stoage boxes from walmart for like $6, I think they hold like 50L. They are not air tight, once in a while toss in some compost to keep them fed. Sometimes the maintainence of them is more then they are worth. I still have worms from when Angler_Brazil and I went fishing last thurs......lol.

They should be ok for winter fishing / ice fishing. They (obviously) won't freeze once in the water, and not every day will be -20.

You could probably pick 100 worms off your lawn in an hour after a good rain. Last night would have worked!

I picked up 5 worm containers left behind by other anglers over the weekend while exploring some of the tribs. Find a spot that gets a lot of angling traffic and chances are you'll locate some used but intact containers. Fill them with moist dirt and coffee grounds and put 15-20 worms per container depending on the size.

I was going to mention the same thing.

I grab what I need after a good rain, last time I got about 2 dozen in 10 minutes on a park trail...

I likely could have gotten 100 if I searched an hour or more.

This weekend I found a place for $2.50/doz which is alright in my books.

Careful!!. The last thing you want is 400 dead worms!!!

Just checked in on my worm collection to make sure there weren't a bunch of dead ones on the bottom that I didn't know about and man does 500 worms ever go fast when you use 50 in a weekend! I bet I don't even have 200 left....

Picked up about 50 worms in a church parking lot this morning. Very easy pickin.

I'd suggest you try this tomorrow morning (maybe not churches tomorrow tho) if you aren't fishing!

Save a few bucks. Unless you can get em real cheap.

heck with Olympia Bait in Scarborough.... not sure about their prices but hey, they wholesale and it is Scarborough so it must be cheaper than usual. Also have a spot for worms... if my mind serves me right... 3 golden coins gets you two dozen... it maybe $3.50...
