Camping

Hi Guys,

As the spring and summer approach I am getting ready to make some camping plans. I do a fair bit of camping but it is always for rest, relaxation and usually a more than healthy amount of drinking with friends.

One thing that I have never done while camping is any fishing. I'm hoping to get out a few times with just the girlfriend for some nice quiet camping where I can get out and do some fishing as well.

What am I looking for? I would love your recommendations for any nice camping areas that offer some good fishing opportunities. Somewhere that I can take a nice hike with the gf along the shoreline and find some nice shore fishing spots would be excellent. Also, places with boat rentals or with boat rentals near by would be great too, as that would be a fun way to spend a day.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Definitely gotta bring the fishing gear man, you won't regret it!

Where are you starting from, how far are you willing to drive, will you be portaging or drive-in camping, and (if opting for the drive-in) are you looking for motorboat rentals or canoes/kayaks etc?

I might be able to give you some insight to parks further from TO but if you're looking to stay near the GTA and you're not looking to portage I might not be of much help...but this page lets you search prov. parks by desired location and accomodations:

I am starting from Toronto and willing to drive 2-3 hours. I will not be portaging, this will be for drive in camping.

In terms of boats, depending on the body of water I'm fishing I might take a look at a canoe but otherwise I'd be looking at a motorboat.

I'll do some digging on the site you sent me.

Last year I was looking into Awenda Provincial park as well as Six Mile Lake Provincial Park. Anyone have experience with either of these places?

I have been to six mile and for what your looking for i think you will love it. Not only does it have great fishing which is always the first thing i look into you can rent somthing to get out on the water with. One of the reasons my wife and i like six mile is that within a quick drive it has a bridge that people jump off as well as a smoth rock beach where you and your friends can chill for the day. The spot is just so nice and makes for a really fun day. If you dont wanna drive out of the part it have a really nice beach. I strongly recommend the bridge day tho.

across from 6 mile is a lake called mcrae lake--crown land with about 200 useeable camp sites---great fishing--cliffs to jump off of, island you can camp on as well--canoe in for 30 minutes or hike for an hour and end up at some great sites--no bathrooms --shit-in-the-woods type accomodations but awesome and 6 mile is awesome as well---you can rent canoes there cheap --the lake is a maze of pike and bass infested bays---i also do alot of backapcking and camping--at some point i have been everywhere..lol

Remy&Cover...That sounds awesome I think I'll have to check those spots out. the Crown land sounds especially appealing...

Mike: Big Salmon Lake in Frontenac Prov Park has what you're looking for but no motorboats and maybe 3.5 hours from TO on a good day so you might want to just heed the advice given by the others.

Thanks for all of the advice guys. From what I've read, Six Mile is a good place to go, probably my best bet. The crown-land definitely sounds like a lot of fun, too. Not sure that my girlfriend would be down for the poop-in-the-woods style accommodations but I might head out with a few more adventurous buddies.

Remy - Can you PM me some more specific information about where to go and how to get there?

BWB - Frontenac sounds like it might be a little bit too far but I will definitely look into it.

The Ontario Parks site also brought up Bass Lake Provincial Park as a viable option. Has anyone been there?

bass lake is gfantastic also--great fishing although it has been almost wiped out of bass--people tend to fish there alot caus of the name--but the swimming is great and for kids it rocks

campsites are all close to the road so if you dont like road noise this place is not for ya...

That's a shame.

From looking around online it seemed like it might be the best place to walk around and find a good spot to fish from shore.

I figured it might be a popular place because of the name.

If all the bass are gone what's left? Panfish?

French River. Many places where you can drive in, park the car and canoe out to camp sites. We rented from Hartley Bay Marina ( I think thats what it was called ), parked the car there and canoed around for 4 days. Amazing fishing, great wildlife and awesome scenery. What I like best is that the sites are fairly spaced out and wild, not like some of the other parks where the camping grounds have roads, showers, stop signs and your neighbour is 10 meters away from you, unless of course that is what you are looking for. 3 hours away from Toronto, highly recommended. Don't forget to stash the food up in a tree

Camping and fishing go together hand in hand with beer too.

Algonquin wouldn't be a bad choice either. Also the Bruce Peninsula has some nice campgrounds as well.

Does anyone have a good campground to recommend on the 1000 Islands Parkway between Gananoque and Brockville? I was driving through there last week and its just campground after campground and the water and dropoffs looked pristine. Any spots with near shore campsites, boat/canoe rentals and in a good area as far as dropoffs to fish near shore?

I have also looked into Oastler and Grundy Lake Provincial Parks. Does any one have experience with these two?
