So I really want to start frog fishing and I have done a lot of research on it and it seems that most people use a bait caster instead of spinning gear.
So I want to know if I can frog fish with this setup I have. I have a medium action 6.5' spinning rod it seems to be a good rod. For line I currently have 8 lb mono on the spool. I know I could land a big fish with this line if I had the drag set correctly and I was in open water where the fish cant bury himself in the weeds. But I don't know about frog fishing. They say online to use 65 lb braid on a Bait caster. I read somewhere else that he frog fish with I think its called 30 lb power pro braid. with a bigger spinning reel than mine. So over all I am not sure if my rod is strong enough and I am almost positive that my line needs to be upgraded. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks

Your set up isn't going to work for frog fishing. The rod and line are too light.

Can you fish a frog with spinning gear? Yes, but you'll destroy your gear in no time.

Ideally 50+ pound braided line on a higher gear ratio casting reel paired up with a 7 foot + heavier power casting rod.

One of my favorite ways to fish.

good luck.

If the budget is tight you could get away with your setup. The only thing you will have to change is the line. I would get braid min 30lb.

Thank you so much I dont think I will fish it with this gear.

but i don't know if my reel will hold 30 lb braid. i think i would lose a lot of distance casting.

You might not be able to get the pigs out of the salad but who cares. Get out there have fun with what you have and you’ll figure it out.

In my opinion there is no such thing as universal setup. As mentioned before your spinning would do the job with the line upgrade. You are researching a new lure and everything that comes with it. Do not make the learning curve even harder by introducing a new hardware as well. Bait-casting reel takes substantial amount of practice to master.

50 and 65 lb braid is ridiculous.
Your set up is fine.
Steer em with the rod.
Try and keep em up.
Sure some will sound and break off.
And some won't.
Plus
The ones that beat ya are the best fish stories.

8lb mono fishing a frog is ridiculous . You’ll bust off 90% of your fish if not more...especially fishing weeds/pads.

As mentioned above; if Money is tight at least upgrade your line to at least 20lb braid.

Your watching too many Yankee fishing shows .
We use live frogs 6 lb test and ultralite rods for smallies on rock piles all the time. It's a blast .
As far as pads go , fish the edges .
Ambush bass just a sitting and waiting to rush out and chow down .
Enjoy
.

Wow thanks every one I am going to think about it more and then i will tell you what i have decided. I am going fishing today at the river, there are alot of weeds there and if its sunny i will use a texas rig and punch threw the weeds and see if that works.

Hey i am back.
I went fishing and i caught a smallmouth that was really small on a wacky rig senco then i fished a Texas rig and that did not work so i started punching threw the grass and no bites. But i got a couple snags even with the tip of the hook buried in the senco. So over all not a great fishing trip. But i did only fish for an hour so i guess its not to bad.

Hopefully the fish start to bite better soon, not sure why they would but anyhow.
I know bites are harder to get in midday but are not impossible but maybe that has something to do with it.

If you guys have any other suggestions about frog fishing or just have an idea what else i could try to get the fish to bite that would be great.

Thanks

30lb braid is the same diameter as 8lb mono.
Braid cuts through the air easier than mono,
You could increase your casting distance with braid.
Braid cuts through some weeds, mono gathers up all the weeds.

Your reel might not have enough power to pull the fish out of the weeds.
The rod is definitely lightweight for the task.

These guys are absolutely correct.
If your intentions are to cast into the middle of full blown weed beds.
You do need a telephone pole , winch , and 90 lb braid.
But . What's the fun in that ?
This is Canada.
No peacock bass around here that I'm aware of.
You can listen to the sales pitch hype of needing 30 rod setups for an afternoon on the water.
Or just carry 3 spools of various line poundage.
I know my preference.

K.I.S.S acronym
Keep

Simple
Stupid
Like buying a 165 k bass boat.
Or paying 85 bucks for a 16 foot rental for the day.
If you can afford buying . By all means go for it.

Thanks

I probably wont frog fish with any of the gear i have now. But in the future i may buy a bait caster or something strong enough to frog fish.
On a tight budget.

Try to get a bait caster with at least 15lbs drag minimum.
Gear ratio, 7.1:1 is high speed lest torque. 4.1:1 is slower speed more torque (power)

(Personally I like High speed ratio with a broom stick for frogging in the heavy weeds)

For Rod
You need a (H) Heavy or (XH) extra heavy rod with Fast or Extra Fast action (also referred to as a "soft tip")
(MH) Medium Heavy is to light,

The shorter the rod the easier you'll find casting, 6'6"
If you can find one ?

Tie on a soft plastic frog hookless, meaning don't use a hook, "wire or string"
Get out in the backyard with a large ring "hoolahoop"
Practice casting into it, work your way back till your accurate from distance.
Time to learn about birds nests (backlashes).
Have patience, using your thumb will become second nature.
Start with mono, work to braid when you have the technique
Then graduate to a bucket or pale.
Watch bait casting technique videos on YouTube

Thank Dan

Great tips i will definitely look into those things. But it will probably be in the future. Probably no time soon.
By the way i am 14 years old and i really appreciate these tips.

Thanks

Sounds like you might possibly want to get away from the social network drama & video games.
It really sucks when The parents house, feed & support you in every way, LOL
I'm not making fun of you. I fondly remember those good ol days.
It's called growing up & it was a lot of fun.

I have an ingenious idea, It's summer, you want to fish.
Grab the lawnmower & a gas can.
Go to a more elderly niebourhood, knock on some doors & offer to cut there lawn for a fee.

Just a couple weeks
ya got ya a fat wad biginuff fo dat frogging rig ya been belly achin bout.
And a selection of pretty little frogs with double hooks in them,
Maybe even a frog hook trailer hook tagging along for the ride

Not to mention a weekly source of cash income.
Yes you have to show up on time for next cutting.

Here is a couple starter Rod suggestions.

6' or 6'6" 10lb-20lb
https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/bass-pro-shops-tourney-special-casting-rod

6' 12lb-20lb or 6'6" 12lb-25lb
https://www.cabelas.ca/product/37465/cabelas-whuppin-stick-casting-rods

You'll,eventually want a longer Rod, This short Rod will help to learn casting a bait casting reel.
& it is a handy length to have in tight situations.

Unfortunately the reel has all the moving parts & does all the hard work.
You really need Spend a little money on your Baitcasting reel,
It will outlast your broken rods in the long run.
They come Left & Right Hand retrieve.

Gear ratio, (ratios aren't specific, just examples)
5.1:1 is a good medium ratio for all around.
3.1:1 is for pulling logs in heavy cover.
7.1:1 is for getting fish away from nearby cover & obstacles quickly.
Reel spins 7.1 times around spool for every :1 one turn on handle.

This is one reason why some people have multiple baitcasting rods.
Another reason is to have the water colum covered ie:
Topwater plug, shallow diver plug, deep diver plug & bottom jig,

If your serious plan on spending around $80 upward

Good Luck
