This video displays the changes in mentality that I hope will someday come back to Ontario. What these guys in the US were doing is actually perfectly legal to do in Ontario. Bowfishing for Carp is perfectly legal and there is also no limit on Common Carp. There is a reason that there is no limit on Common Carp, they are an invasive species wether they are currently classified as that in the regs or not. What I would like to see happen is regular tournaments where the winners are determined by total weight of their catch with no limit plus maybe a prize for biggest fish. Conditions of the tournament would be that no Common Carp are to be released, anyone bringing in a fish that isn’t a Common Carp would be disqualified without any means of protest. All Carp caught in these tournaments would then be donated to local farmers to be used as fertilizer. Its the perfect way to conserve our fishery without wasting useful meat.

After a recent thread that was posted about Carp I noticed a lot of people who don’t understand the catastrophic damage these fish cause. There are even some groups out there who actually promote conservation of Carp and releasing monster Carp! What are these people smoking? This gave me the idea to create a group to promote just the opposite, the ACC (Anti-Carp-Coalition). Unfortunately I am extremely busy with work recently and I don’t currently have the ambition to accomplish the goals I had set out. Hopefully things will calm down for me at some point and I can get that group going.

Please watch the full video, at the end they show just how they put the carp meat to good use. There is even nice footage of a Musky in the video, probably cruising the marina looking for a nice snack sized carp to chomp down on.

Your video needs that Banjo riff from Deliverance......

I hope your Cap hate group never gets off the ground. Thank god that the MNR has better Carp population management tools than boats of rednecks with bows....

What do you have against Caps? They provide great protection from shade. Dont pull the redneck aspect in on this one to try and detract away from the actual point. Carp are incredibly invasive and tournaments could be a great way to help control the population. Did you actually watch the end of the video where they made good use of the meat? It doesn’t have to be bowfishing, it could be rod and reel fishing as well.

i dont think carp are invasive... i find it hard to beleave they are, im not saying anyone is right or wrong. the carp are the river cleaners! they eat garbage that WE put in the water systems.. they have also been blamed for destroying lakes and ponds, but i dont see how? yes they eat alot of plants! some that are invasive. they spawn like crazy, but when the eggs hatch they provide alot of other fish with food.

i seen on the ACC facebook site, they poisoned a whole lake just to rid it of carp, some type of chemical was used to whip out everything! completely! plants animal's all of it.... for what? nice clear water? a swimming hole you can tell your kids " dont worrie kids, we killed every thing in the lake so you dont have to worrie about any fish eating you."

but like i said! im not here to say whos right or wrong, i just think things are the way they are b/c of nature! and we dont have the right to change it. we can help it one day at a time.. maybe if there wasent so much trash for them to eat in the rivers and lake then maybe they wouldent be around as much. i donno..

anywho.

I have an ACC FB group but there really isnt anything in it, did you find a different ACC page? Im not sure who poisoned the entire lake but that is just about the dumbest idea I have ever head. One of my goals with the ACC is to educate people on how Carp actually effect fisheries as there are a TON of anglers out there who have the wrong information given to them.

Carp dont eat trash. Their primary diet consists of plant matter, when they consume plant matter not only are they capable of wiping out entire wetlands which can harm countless endangered species but they also only digest a small percentage of the plant matter and the rest is released back into the water in a potent mass of nutrients that cause algae blooms which prevent light from getting to the plants and cause further damage. Carp also feed on aquatic insects and even small baitfish on occasion. The real problem with Carp is that these effects get magnified when their populations explode out of control and dominate small ponds that were once great fishing spots for all sorts of species like bass and crappie. All that ends up being left is a muddy pond that is just packed with Carp. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that most people who advocate on behalf of Carp also happen to love fishing for Carp, their motives may not be in the right place.

Tournaments on smaller fisheries that are infested with carp could have a huge benefit. Maybe one of the goals of the ACC could be to create a network of farmers who would be happy to accept Carp caught by local anglers to use as fertilizer. When people fish and catch Common Carp they could then take it to a local farmer who would then use it as fertilizer. HOW CAN ANYONE IN THE RIGHT FRAME OF MIND HAVE AN ISSUE WITH THIS??????????????????? It would help benefit fisheries and wetlands while also putting the meat to good use. We cant eliminate Carp but we CAN do our best to control Carp, everything I have suggested in this thread is completely within the regulations.

It might be within the letter of the MNR rules, but it's definitley outside the spirit.
I checked with the city and the cops, and I wont have to worry about bow use within any of the municipal City parks that I fish for Carp in. A quick call to 911 and they'll be on it like....er, like cops on a public parks weapons charge arrest.

Who knew Toronto City had so many Carp bow-fishing sanctuaries. NICE!

You are focusing too much on the use of a Bow here, I dont even think a bow-fishing tournament would even be feasable seeing as I have never come across anyone who uses a bow for fishing or even found a bowfishing bow in a store.

The tournaments I vision would be with Rod and Reel. I apologize if the use of a bow has offended you as that was not my intention. I was hoping to promote the idea of methods of conservation that dont require government funding. Did you see the end of the video, that seemed like a brilliant way not to waste the meat IMO. From other posts you have made on the forum it seems like you are in favor of controlling the carp population? While you may be against Bow fishing are you against tournaments with a rod and reel? Being there is no limit for Carp annual tournaments could go a long way in controlling the population.

I guess the thread was titled "Carp Bow Fishing" lol. I would like to make it clear that these tournaments would be with Rod and Reel and NOT with a Bow.

Do you any good places to bow fish for carps? if you do would u mind giving me directions to them? thanks alot

LOL Gabe something tells me Mike may be tight lipped about any spots that bowfishing would be legal. I think your best bet is to go to a hunting store and find out where it is legal to use a weapon such as a bow. From there you can then find out where carp holding waters are that are also in areas that are legal to use a bow.

I will admit that after doing further research the farmer network idea is not viable in Ontario due to the way the regulations are currently written. Conservation efforts for carp on such a scale require sanction from the MNR so it is not something that just anyone can organize.

Either way Staffman, I thank you for the encouraging words and for taking the time to read this thread.

That is a widely misconstrued phrase.

In angling, it's "survival of the fattest", as we release the fattest ones in hopes they spawn again.

YUP....
and we'll smoke the roaches..............

I wouldn't mind trying some smoked carp. Heard it's good.. but don't got a smoker. <_<
I bought some smoked carp around Christmas time years ago at A&P it was really quite good...I took it to work and shared some with a Polish fellow he said it was a delicacy in Europe where it is often smoked during special occasions like Christmas.. :)

Christmas Carp! One of the weirdest things I have heard of. They buy the Carp live and keep it fresh in their bath tub until Christmas Eve.
