Any gear will do to catch the odd carp. If you get into the sport then you can consider buying stuff that will take the beating that carp will put on your equipment. The right terminal tackle or carp rigs are what you need to use to have the best chance of hooking and landing one of these brutes. The three best in my opinion are the paylake rig, float rig or set up. and hair rig. You can check my posts out for how to fish with a paylake rig. For the float set up you can use your trout stuff. You fish it with your bait anchored to the bottom by your weight, not drifting like for trout. You can Google up hair rig and find lots of information on how to make and fish it.
 
Hammercarp had a thread with an article about a guy who I believe used an 11' or 11' 6" IM6 raven with 8 or 10lb leader for carp drifting. Seemed similar to a nook setup.
