Well I wanted to get some advice on fishing for carp on the pin reel and i thought to myself, I cant just start a thread about pin reel fishing for carp without catching a carp on the pin first and taking a picture. So i went out last night, braved the flurries and the 40km winds and got the job done.

What I am curious about is when I see those Carpin' videos with the high end setups are they using pin reels? I thought it might work well to deadstick with my pin reel and then when the carp took the bait the reel would spin freely and the fish wouldnt feel anything until I picked up the reel and set the hook. The problem with this method is that the fish might go for a short run and stop and then the reel would just be spinning freely and the line would get tangled in no time.

Any advice or input on Carpin' on the pin would me much appreciated.

Hello NADO
My experience with a centrepin is limited to 2 dinky carp. But I can tell you catching carp on a pin is getting more popular here. When you see the set ups, they are not using centrepins. They are using baitrunner reels. I can also tell you that very big carp are taken on centrepin outfits. I know that because I netted a 43 lber for a guy who was using one. I have contacted that guy to see if he has anything to say that can help you out.

He said this.

"They have clickers for a reason. I have a fuji that says sounder at the switch. Carp when bolting don’t care about drag from the reel."
Centrepins share this feature with baitcasters. On the Ambassadeur baitcasters it's called a" line out alarm". No batteries needed. ;)

Ya i was thinking about that, its just that i was told not to use it as a drag and just use it to stop the reel from spinning. I guess if i just let it go for a short period and take it off right away it might not hurt it too much. Can any center pin owners comment on that?

I have not fished for Carp using a centre pin , however if you would like to learn more than I suggest you go to www.salmoncrazy.com and in the Centre pin discussion section there is a 4 page sticky on Carp fishing with a pin. Hope this helps.

Here's a picture of some typical floats that are used for carp fishing. The carp floats are made with the bulb at the bottom .

Here is one of the ways they are fished.

Hope this helps. :)

I usually use my salmon setup on the carp because there just like salmon and I get them in, last year landed a 28 pound carp on 6 pound flouro
