Last summer i purchased a 40 dollar total tackle set rod spinner combo went out fishing with it about 11-12 times using mostly just worms and a bobber. Now no one in my family fishes so i have had no one to really learn off, i went out and got my self a rod and reel i got a shimano 2500 and a volteaus rod medium fast action 7ft as i fish from docks piers and shore a lot occasional boat. I would love some help with tackle tho, what is the stuff i really need to get? Must have lures especially for pike or small mouth as i would love to get these fish, also any direction to site on how to use certain lures would help. i fish simcoe a lot and different lakes through out muskoka/gravenhurst/hunstville area, Thanks guys!

Well, a good all-around lure I would recommend for Pike are spinnerbaits in various colours (white, chartreuse, and black are my favorites). They are simple lures to use and very effective. Also, I would pick up a couple of Johnson Silver Minnows in the silver finish. I usually tip those with a white twister tail and the pike love it. Some other good starter lures are jigs (twister tails), which you should get in various colours with matching jig heads. For smallmouth, I would go for some drop shot rigs and soft plastic tubes and worms in various colours (you never know what'll work so sometimes you have to keep changing it up til they start biting). Also, pick up a couple of deep diving crankbaits as they can be awesome for smallmouth as well. So yeah, start out with that and add to your arsenal and I'm sure you'll start doing well. Just my two one hundredths of a dollar. Good luck!

Great advise fishingjunky

Some other lures you'll want is some topwater for bass and pike. My favorite topwater for bass and pike are Hula Poppers(white and chartreause) and rapala skitterpops (brown and green frog patterns). A good technique for topwater is fish them when the water is calm(early morning and at dusk). Cast out to the edge of a weedbed or rock pile and let the lure sit until the ripples calm down. Then with your rod tip toward the surface give a sharp 1 foot tug and it'll make a distinct popping sound. If theres a bass there it'll likely hammer it. Dont set the hook instantly, but wait a second after the initial splash then set it.....fish on!! After you nail your first 5 pound smallie on topwater you will want to fish topwater for the rest of your life!! :D

One technique i have found for 3 1/2- 4" tubes are match the water colour with your tubes. We slaughter smallies using 4" tubes in the pumpkinseed colour that closely matches the water colour in the local lake we fish often for bass. TUbes are great for pike as well and they can fish very thick weeds very effectively.
Crankbaits....cranks are awesome for pike and bass. Rapala, rapala, rapala...they work great and most of my cranks are rapalas. Large J-13, F-18, Rapala Magnums, Husky Jerks hammer pike. Another crank that is a must have is Cotton Cordell Ripplin Red Fin in the silver, gold and chartreause colours. I have hit big fish for a number of species on the red fin. The smaller rapala's work awesome for smallies, especially the shad raps and the fat raps.

Spinners also work well for bass and pike(all species really). #5 mepps in silver on sunny days will hit good number of pike and bass. Also #6 panther martins are great for both species. If you are after big pike look into size #20 and #28 panther martins, also mepps muskie killers. To reduce line twist use a barrell swivel.(use one for tube baits as well) Though if you are really searching big pike you might want a more heavy action rod/reel. Wire leaders are a must if fishing pike water.

One last thing...look through the forums and you'll find "Favorite lures for pike" threads(and other species) and you'll find many more specific lures for target species...good luck to you!
