Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and new to float fishing as well.
I started last year on my buddy's noodle rod using a spinning reel.
I have been reading up over the summer and decided to get a starter center pin setup - but I don't have anyone around me with center pin experience to guide me.

I have a couple questions that hopefully you knowledgeable folks can help with:

1) Is it common to use a backing before the mono mainline and leader? If so - what do you prefer?
2) After you put line on the reel - how do you secure the tag end of the line? On my spinning reels, there's a little slot where you can secure the tag end of the line so that it doesn't come un-spooled when not in use. Is there a similar function on a center pin reel? I really didn't want to ask this question, as I feel like there must be an obvious simple solution - but i just couldn't find it.

Thanks!

Everyone I know uses backing. It helps to fill the spool (some reels have really deep spools). 20lb dacron is the norm, some people use a shoelace.

To secure it once the reel is spooled either use an elastic or a small piece of tape.

Cheers.

i have backing on two reel and the other has 12p raven strait through. some say straight mono can warp the spool.maybe the frame spools, but i dont think that the one piece aircraft grade aluminum will warp.fun to put on wild coloured backings though.

as far as the line thing, if my line is not in the water, my reel is in the case. if im doing maintenance tape or elastic as above
