Hey guys finally got my center pin float reel, now i just need some help with the set up. need to know how much leader to use and and how to properly set up the float. i know its a real newbie question to ask but i just want to make sure i have things right.

I got 8 lb main line and a 13 ft rod, i am thinking of using 6 lb leader. if the stuff im using is wrong as well please let me know . I am aiming for steelhead and brown.

thanks.

Good start !! I use 8 lb floro shot line with my float and shot on it !! If my deepest hole is 8' I use 8' shot line with 3' floro leader with swivel between main and shot line and shot line and lead !! Adjust as necessary good luck

I agree , good start ! I use 10 lb. mainline ,8 lb. shot line, and 6 lb. leader. I also use two swivels with a leader from 18" to 30".

awesome thanks a lot for the input guys glad to know im on the right path.

not sure how new you are, but make sure you float is running properly. balance it so only the orange top is showing, and it is floating straight up as is runs downstream. if I had a dollar for every float I see halfway out of the water leaning on its side...

I would honestly like to help. but just by memory, i know i personally have written at least 50 posts on this forums covering everything. do a bit of search or go through my content, you are sure to come across all your answers.

I think you did well with the set up. I have 10lb main, 8lb shot line and 4lb leader. It has been working steady for me in any condition. The only thing I change is size of float and length of shot line and of course type of bait.

ok i set up a few like in that link Tails posted. ill be trying it in faster moving water hoping to get out tomorrow to try out, and as to how new I am at this hopefully tomorrow will be my first try at the center pin float fishing, i have fished the area before with a baitcaster and some spoons with ok outcome so hopefully the water allows for good practice. thanks for all of the advice guys it is really appreciated.

Casting with a CP is a Biatch and takes some practice...get ready to get pi$$y and don't toss it in the water! Good luck to ya!

Lets hope it doesn't come to that lol. I have watched a few vids people on this forum posted of them fishing and i watched the way they cast. gonna be hard remembering there is no drag on the center pin...

thanks.

Prepare to have birds nests, line wraped around the CP, and don't forget the line all tangled around your float! LOL!! Since you have used a Bait Caster...you will have gone through some of the pain. Just remember to use a micro-swivel between your main line, shot line and leader to help reduce line twist. Then again...I'm a total n00b so you might not want to listen to me! LOL! I'm someone that can still barely cast past 30 feet using a 13 foot rod. I know the physics of it, have googled/u-tubed the crap out of it and watch other people for literally hours doing it. Getting there, but it can be a bit frustrating...hang in there.....lol...at least that's what I keep telling myself...and I'm slowly getting better at it!

hey thats more then i know so any info and advice i can get can mean a huge difference out on the water. and yea i keep hearing that from a lot of people to be prepared for a frustrating time but to hang in there. just wondering if tomorrow is gonna be a problem 65km/h wind gusts so hope it slows down.

sounds like i need to take your out and show you the ropes.

Save your self some frustration and practice at home !! Practical casting and try to keep the line between your tip and weight from touching the ground as when fishing this will save a lot of ice from forming on the line

sounds like a good idea, thanks i will practice a bit at home before i go out and try it.

Saw your profile picture with the reel and thought to myself "that's a sharp looking set up". Then i looked at mine, and realized why i liked it so much.

I must say you are a man of good taste lol.

just a suggestion, i use fly fishing tippet line made by orvis as a leader, smaller diameter but " TRUE " test rating, thats in my opinion, i might be wrong but thats what i heard from a couple of anglers i met out in the east, been using it for the fall steelhead, best 11 bucks ever spent! tightlines!!!
