Hey guys/gals,

I was on another fishing site I visit and this add was posted. These are handmade flies from Kenya that I think look pretty good and are really cheap. I do not know the quality but was wondering if you guys could tell whether they are good quality and worth buying or just forget them, if I do buy a few, which ones should I buy. Well, hell because of the price I will probable buy a few anyways.

here is the link to their site.

When I owned my tackle shop I had lots of fly tying companies from Kenya contact me.. After doing some research and getting lots of feedback I decided not to buy from any of them.

I'm sure not all of them are bad, but.. I've heard some bad things like orders paid for and never received.. also many are known for poor quality flies, hooks bending, breaking, rusting quickly. I've also used Kenya flies myself and had the head thread unravel quickly and the flies fall apart quickly... you sometimes get what you pay for. cheap isn't always best..

with that being said... I've also used some decent Kenya tied flies...

I would recommend asking around for more feedback on the company before you buy.. I would also ask the company to provide numbers or contacts of stores that buy from them to be sure you'll get quality and legit service.

Good luck

u can tie your own there are many videos on youtube teaching u step by step. nothing more rewarding then catching a fish on your own fly.

There are some fantastic flies you can tie, like our man f^d said, plenty of videos on youtube and if you have the time to do it, its a lot of fun. Just dont go out and buy stuff you dont need, fnd out exactly what fles you want, and buy the appropriate stuff.

I'd be worried sending money to Kenya to buy flies, I mean, I think thats where my dead relatives lawyer wants me to send some money to re open their account and I can inherit billions of dollars. Or wait... bah, my memory is good but its short. You know, all those internet scams. Just be careful.

We've got FishHeads on board here, he sells flies. Browse through the classifieds, sometimes stuff pops up there.

I actualy do not fly fish. I was going to get them to see if I could use them on a spin cast.

Flies are a lot of fun off spinning reels for panfish, but you can use them for a variety of game species.

For example, you can drop a fly off the side of a pier or dock which not only panfish will hit, but even bass and other species too. You definitely do not need a fly rod to use flies. For trout, you can let the current take your fly and just keep your bail open. I do this often for resident trout in small streams.

I have been on the lookout for cheap flies. Apparently Dollarama used to sell them but I can't find them there now. I'm sure making your own is a lot of fun, but there's only so many hours in a day and I don't think the Earth is slowing down its rotation anytime soon.

Thanks for the tips.

You dont need to use a fly rod to use flies. As other posters have stated, running the under a float works wonders, not only for trout either. Two flies I would recommend for trout would be the wooly bugger and hares ear nymph. Two very productive flies. In fact, you can make your own very easily and they work too. Just thread a peice of yarn about 3 inches long ( red, pink, orange ) onto your hook and you've got yourself a yarn fly ;)

Thanks, I got to try that out!

Hiya Noob:

There are some very simple and effective patterns you can tie yourself...steelheading will require a stout Kamasan hook (razor sharp).
