Chrome lightning!

I got my first steelhead of the season yesterday afternoon. I was casting a Smithwick Rogue when this beauty hit.
I'm still casting off the pier in the west end and don't plan to hit the rivers until the snow comes. I've seen a number of fish jumping and had a few follows, too. I don't carry a scales, or even a measuring tape, but I'm guessing she went about 8lb. Beauty fish.

I'm sure she's headed in that direction, but likely won't be hitting a rattling minnow again anytime soon.

Nice momma. Here's a tip if you're concerned about length. Put a wrap of masking tape 30" from the butt of the rod. Then you can get a rough length.

That's a good idea. I haven't been very concerned about length or weight, but there are times when it would be nice to know.
