Spent some time on the west coast recently, travelling between Vancouver and Santa Cruz. A wedding brought me to California and then I stayed to surf. Did not do any fishing, but the highlight of this trip was definitely fish related and ultra cool.
I spent a few days in Montara, and last Monday afternoon I was checking the surf at Montara Beach from the cliff that overlooks the beach, when I was noticed what looked like a whale, quite close to shore. Stood there for a minute wondering, then it surfaced again, and again, and again. Several whales were visible, making their way northward. It was hard to believe how close to the beach they were, they were swimming right along what we surfers call the "line up", basically just past the breakers. Massive, magnificent creatures.
Further down the coast I saw dolphins and loads of otters/seals/sea lions/whatever the heck they were.
These are pics of the beach where I saw the whales, taken a couple of days before the sighting. They first appeared right behind those large rocks in the left side of the pic, and continued northward parallel to the beach. No whale pics, and honestly I don't think any pics would have been able to do it justice.
And a pic I took on a stop along the coastal highway. It's a very pristine coastline, with long undeveloped stretches.
I am now on the east coast in the US, mostly surfing but some of the best surf spots are along jetties that are heavily fished. Met a local fisherman today that was using a tiny "tide pool" on the jetty to keep his flounder fresh:
