Competition Ideas

Me and a group of local anglers around durham(mostly my buddies) have a fishing competition on facebook. every fish over 12 inches (you may round from 11.5 and up to 12) is added to a total. for instance the competition leader(not me) has 35 fish a 697 inches in total. the angler with the most total length on december 31st wins. our comp has run dec 1st 2008(to allow maximum ice fishing) till dec 31st 2009.

rules:

1.no intentional snagging

2. tip ups and hand lines are acceptable

3. all fish must be caught in ontario (out of season fish are allowed)

4.photographic proof of the fish and the measurement are required for the fish to count, or an eye witness in the competition must see the fish caught.

5.comercially stocked ponds do not count

-any flaws in the competition?
-how can it be made better?
-any better systems?
-PERHAPS NEXT YEAR ONE LIKE THIS COULD BE DONE HERE?

Looks like alot of fun.

I do not like the fact that out of season fish are on the count. While it doesn't specificaly promote out of season targetting of species; it does not discourage it. The regs are there for a reason; to sustain our healthy resource, and ensure it's vitality for the generations that come after us. Be it recreation, tourneys and whatnot, it is us the fisherman that must take the lead in the effort to promote best practices. I would remove the stipulation that oos fish are eligable to the count. Just my two cents.

Reefrunner has a good point...even posting an OOS fish can sometimes ruffle feathers,,but the rest sounds like fun.

i feel the same way about the oos fish counting, as reefrunner said, it doesnt encourage oss fishing, but it doesnt discourage it either

I agree about getting the OOS fish out of your competition.

For argument sake, assume you aren't targeting them.

You state in your rules that a picture with measurement must be shown. By doing this you are prolonging the time a fish is out of the water and as the MNR rules state, any OOS must be released immediately. Even though a pic and measurement can be done super fast, it isn't really accepted. It's bad fishing etiquette, although technically not illegal.

I agree with everyone else regarding out of season fish.

Sounds like a fun way to get some competition in with the fishing buddies though!

i see what u guys are saying about the oos fish thing.

The person running it did make sure that people didnt target that, it was stated simply to avoid the catching of a massive fish that could change the entire competition that doesnt even count.

its all for fun so were not sneaking above the 401 before steelhead open.
