Two questions
1. What's the purpose of people 'ripping' at the end of a float?
2. I tried to join floatfishing.net and it won't accept a gmail addy? I tried emailing the admin but didn't get a response.

Cheers!

1. I know people will do a hook set at end of drift to see if there is a lazy fish on the end, or trying to snag into a fish in the pool.

2. Not a clue.

I only do it in freezing weather so water get of my line and don't freeze up my rings. Yes i have seen people do that with no particular reason in couple holes that i visit often usually i,m there first get couple fish before they arrive. Then they start ripping and for some reason fish stops biting and they don,t believe me that i had 3 or 4 fish just 10min ago. :)) Wonder why? :))

That was my thought, that it would spook the fish even more.

Thats my pet peeve right there..... setting the hook at the end of a drift without the float even going down

I don't use a float, but I have fished next to float fishermen, who did this at the end of their drifts. Their logic is that since some of the takes are not detectable by the float, they might as well assume they have a fish at the end of each drift. They weren't snagging or flossing, and they did well, but I am not sure if any of them hooked up at the end of their drifts. I"m sure it happens sometimes though.

I've seen it advised on this forum to do it also.

I only do it at the end of my drift if my float goes down. Alot of the times the end of your drift is also where the pool gets shallower. Usually as the day goes on I get more skeptical of the float going down at the end of my drift and I am tired of losing worms so I wont even set it at the end when my float goes down.

Picture a deep pool say 6', the river ahead and below is only 2 1/2'. The slower water is at the head, tail and at the inside bend of the pool. These are the three places fish will be holding with little effort to fight the current. This is your pool, so kneeling just below the middle of the pool, you cast up ahead of it by 4-6'. This way your bait will have a chance to straighten out by the time it hits the head of the pool where you hope the fish are. Your float will bounce a bit only b/c your bait is hitting the bottom, recall it's only 2 1/2 ' deep there. Once your bait/float reaches the head it will now be in the strike zone, your line should be near taught and rod tip up high, keep your eye on your float and get ready to set that hook. As it slowly drifts past the head it may bounce a bit due to current. When it hits the middle of the pool all is calm and it is just floating along. Now never taking your eyes off your float you'll see it bouncing again. This is either hitting the bottom of the tail of the pool or there is a fish lipping your bait. Not taking any chance at losing or spooking a potiential fish you set the hook. That is when you'll be in for a fight or another cast.

I know steelheaders can be under a lot of pressure, but how about saving the float ripping for when the fish actually bites? :)

1. People do it in loaded pools to snag. Some people do it as habbit. I do it when I'm fishing big water, pull it in closer to me, spin the reel, and repeat. (Helps from constantly reeling as its a pain with a 1-1 ratio lol).

2. It won't accept gmail for some reason, I used my hotmail and had no issues.
