I have gotten into steelheading pretty much every weekend in the past couple months and have noticed when I approach a good pool holding fish usually am met with dirty looks and mean glares. As such I generally keep moving but whenever I hook a fish 10 guys materialize and take over the spot. Should I also be a jerk?? Opinions??

You need to sit back and think why am I getting the bad looks from all these fishermen. Usually when someone is successful he gets approached for information and advice. Are you doing something wrong or maybe annoying others ?

Depends on which trib. My home trib is pretty chill and gets pounded on a daily basis and being such a popular trib...it brings in all kinds of characters. It has its fair share off jerks but...I'm talking about 8 ft between 2 guys and turn it into 4ft because one guys friend squeezes in....10 guys in 1 pool reduces your chance....might as well move further down.

I feel you. Tried it for a few years and experienced way more negative then good so I stopped going to the river shit shows. Forget that river garbage, I always have a spot open in my boat, come bass fishing instead.

ya there are always those stupid f.u.c.k.e.r.s who think they own the river. I ran into one this weekend. He got mad at me for walking past him to fish the water downstream before he could. Half the guys you come across in the river are selfish f.u.c.k.s and get mad at you when you come to "their spot".

Its kind of a gong show on the weekends. And not many fish moving up. I finally got fed up and went to a different trib.

Dont worry you are not the only one. i find that the tribs near the big city have those types of guys. But it goes the other way as well, you do meet those guys that are friendly, sometimes even chatting so much you lose focus on your float.

It's really quite simple.
Just like the start of a bad marriage.
No communication!
Talk to one another.
Whether you feel like you could be encroaching or not.
ASK.
Proper rythym and timing 4 guys can drift a hole or run no problem.
It's only going to get busier.
Find a solution together or please yes.
Go out in your bass boat.

Sounds like some of you boys need to do a little leg work and find some new water. All those tribs out east are nothing but a sh-t show.

Not much leg work involved this time of year.
Limited sections available till opener.
I'll put up with the river traffic in exchange for 20 min drive to my local tribs.

Just wondering which tribs are these that attracts these types? As I said, most tribs I visit are pretty chill...on weekends, I'm by the river as early as 6am and mind you sometimes I'm the first or 2nd there...it gets busy by 8am... no need to fight for a spot since at that point, i'm probably taking a break and let others fish the spot...just move to other spots...heck sometimes I drive to the next trib just to catch up with other fishing friends...i have invested gear , $$$ & time for someone just to ruin it...the only thing really that sometimes people need to learn is to give others a chance to cast. because I've seen people set the hook but don't retrieve...like they let it drift again...that's kind of a hog move when you know others are waiting and don't want to cast over your line...set the hook, reel in and re-cast for chrissake.

Floating with a spinning rod. Its not easy keeping slack out but I'm too broke to buy a pin yet. I actually notice some guys will smile and I will always ask how the bite is. Once even asked to share a pool with two guys and they were more than accommodating. Some really nice folks I am getting to know always there. There's lots of friendly folks too

@Adamthedrummer...are you from the west tribs or east? as it gets warmer with still limited fishing spots...I guess some people can get very touchy about spots because most crowds will converge the most accessible popular spots, and more and more people are eager to fish to shake the rust off...

I just had to ask because when you have 4-5 guys working a pool ( float fishing) and someone shows up chucking spoons and stuff guys do get a bit edgy if you know what I mean.

I did that once. Was floating roe with pinners and the fish weren't paying any attention so I tied on a spinner and hooked a fish first cast. The pinners left immediately. I felt really bad. So I won't do that again
