only idiots i say is tthose idiots who toss out weight with marshmellow and poop back when everybody else is casting, causing line tangle.

its those that have no idea what they are doing. like using cheapo combos with heavy line which tangles alot and to get the distance putting 1oz sinker right in front of spoon or crankbait

most people casting spoons know what they are doing, but there are always few that don't, luckily they don't last long, cause swinging spoons requires patience, so they just go for the marshmellow thing instead.

I'll admit, when I first started Salmon fishing the run (two years ago) I was taught to put a heavy-a$$ weight and a hook two feet up with some floating material - this was a wrong approach as it is considered lining. So, with the help of the internet, I learned how to tie up a basic float system and made me own tied roe bags. I went to the banks and took up a spot as far downstream from the others as I didnt want my float to tangle in theirs. So I sat there, tied up, and started floating. Second cast in I land a brute and the guys lining beside me (who I gave my catch to as they were shocked I was going to release the fish) said "luck yes, skill no." They were using frozen shrimp rings

Anyways, looking forward to the run.

I too will be trying earlier this year for the salmon, but at Ashbridges bay instead of the credit.

I'll join in.
But peak fishing hours may not too ideal for you.

Frozenfire will join in too... don't even need to ask because he won't want to miss the action.

Count me in for Ashbridges bay too!!! So far we have : David Kearney , MikeyMikey , Frozenfire , myself... .

Port credit is definitely better place as far as number of salmon goes, but Ashbridges bay is much closer to me and much easier to fish from...

Tangledline is in as well, he lives just around the corner from there.

I will be probably the only guy there using a casting setup that I know of. Shimano CuradoE5 and a 9 1/2 ft of 10 1/2 St. Croix rod, everyone gives me the stares "is he crazy" lol. Casting reels have a great drag system.
I stick out like a sore thumb, come by and say hi.

For sure Jose, I'll keep an eye out for ya. You bring up a good issue, I was thinking of bringing my baitcaster for the drag, so I may be a sore thumb as well, lol.

Here's the debate: I have both a casting and a spinning setup. I prefer the drag system on the baitcatser (Abu C3 6501-spooled with 50# pp), but have landed salmon on my spinning gear (Shimano Sedona 4000RB, spooled with 20# pp). Although I can make a fair cast with the Abu, I can get distance with the Shimano. My rods aren't long as I primarily fish lakes from a boat, but I'm confident I can handle a chinny on either, as I have done so in the past. What would any of you recommend: Baitcast for drag or spin cast for distance?

As an aside, all this talk of Salmon and no porn...let see some fishes all - it's a rainy day.

For me on the piers its all about distance. I bring the spin cast with the long rod to cover as much water with the spoon as possible.

I use a spinning setup. Shimano sedona 4000 like yourself spooled with 30lb pp. The rod if i remember correctly is a shimano convergence 10' medium.

Definitely spinning. Distance is key in this scenario. You may be able to handle a chinny with a baitcasting set-up, but it will make no difference if you can't cast far out enough to hook into one.

Also, if you are going to use either set-up for spoon chucking at the mouth with a shorter rod, replace the trebles with siwash hooks. Because you lose some leverage on the fish with the shorter rods, it's better to use a hook that won't come out.

lol. It is a real photo; not of Toronto, nor Canada for that matter. It was a flood down-south last year after a hurricane...I think in Louisiana or Texas.

Spinning is the best way to go. Guys can still outcast me but not by much. The casting reels IMO have a better drag system and I can put the boots to them. I just hate waiting for guys trying to muscle in a salmon using spinning gear.

The previous year was very good, my fights with the chinook's did not last very long like others(hmmm).
Last year Mikey hooked into a chinook and it ran so much the line almost took out my eye. LOL
It took him a while @ before he could control it. I sat down while he was fighting it and took a nap.

ps. i really do need a better gear to bring the control more to me than to the fish.

I have to say, not from where we fished but I did saw fishermen using baitcast setup and I they sure broght the fish in quicker with better control. Maybe it was just heavier rod? thicker line? I don't know.

Maybe I should get rid of all my cheap gears and buy A quality gear like yours. But still spinning setup.
Maybe heavy ROD!??!! 65lb test braid, and be able to cast only half the distance and reduce my chance by 90%?

I was wondering where exactly you should go to cast spoons at Ashbridges. I went yesterday to scout it out for a couple hours but I couldn't find the pier, all I found were a bunch of good looking girls playing volleyball so I guess it wasn't a complete loss. Thanks.
