hay its beef here i just got a custom center pin by RSG and am curious to who you guys would recomend for a custom rod to go with it i have many rods and reels but wanted to spoil myself for next season any feedback would be great thx

Myself and a few others on this board have used "Black Mamba" custom rods.. I just had my old GL2 completely stripped and re-done.. I am quite happy with the results. Great pricing and quick turn-around.
Not sure if it is against forum rules to post his # on here.. so PM me if you want his contact info.. He is in Brampton.

Clayton! how goes it bud? too bad I didnt have time opener weekend to share a few drifts with ya and have since been baking my a$s off down here ON the equator... When I get back ill shoot you a msg we'll go hit the water and ill let ya try my cts, that should be enough to turn ya

^^ also have friends that have rods built by mamba and nothing but good things!

CTS makes some nice blanks, but they are a bit overrated to be honest. Any of their two piece blanks are very good, three piece blanks on the other hand are overkill for most water in southern Ontario. Same goes for their 15'. I'm guessing if you got the coin for one of Ron Gardiners reels you can probably afford to match it up nicely with an NFC blank. Or go with old faithful and get yourself a 13' 2 piece xst (best all round blank hands down).

well thx guys im not sure what im gonna do but money is not a factor for me i want something that i will never see im not sure what i will do but L2p whats up hope you are fishing down there?? cant wait for the steelies to come back. But hay have any of you made your own rods? i might go that route talk soon until then goodluck and tightlines

I build my own, also doing one for Chris (CJR) at the moment and a memeber of another board. It's not to difficult to be honest, just takes a lot of time and patience. And you need to know how to work a lathe if you want to turn seats, handles and winding checks. As for wrapping thread all you need is a cardboard box and a cup to start. Feel free to pm me if you have any questions, it can be a bit confusing to start.

as for everything youtube has it all! look up mudholes series of how to build rods... and for woodwork its really hard to beat ernie j's work for the money!

ps. Clayton, all ive been doing down here is fishing lol! im guna throw up a post soon!

Despotiko really knows his stuff, I've seen his work and want to add that his craftsmanship is right up there with the estasblished, seasoned rod builders here in Ontario, he takes the time to create very clean looking peices.

What about customizing a fly rod? I put up a thread in the fly fishing section and it isnt really getting much attention. My problem is the cork on the rod doesnt fit the reel seat on the fly reel as the reel seat is too big.

By reel seat do you mean the foot of the reel or the reel seat on the handle of the rod? If the reel foot is to big then you may have to change the reelseat on your handle or new handle all together. If the realseat (handle) is to large and there is play in between the foot and seat then wrapping some electrical tape around the foot will fill any space and get you a snug fit.

Ok I had my terms mixed up. The foot is too big for the seat. Where do you get handles for rods? I assume you would have to go to a good independant tackle shop. Any recommendations?

I wouldn't suggest trying to remove the cork off the blank yourself if youve never done it before its easy to damage the blank. You have to remove the stripper guides as well, then put on a new handle then retie the guides. Angling specialties sells a lot of seats and handles, Tom can also do it all for you. But it honestly might just be cheaper to buy a new rod, unless your dealing with an expensive or sentimental piece.

Truth!
-I completely re-worked my 13" GL2.. when I could have simply bought a brand new 13" GLX.. but as you said, it's a sentimental piece(I have had this rod for 15+ years!)..

hmmm, so seeing as its only a $100 rod I should probably just find another use for it. Its only 9' so I have taken it out on smaller rivers in the past with my pin reel when I knew it would be pretty much impossible to move around with my 13'. Too bad, it was a gift from my mom/girlfriend one year. The owner of a fishing store that was closing down recommended a combo to them that didnt even fit together! lol and then by the time I was given the gift the store was closed...
