I've been using this for 3 years. It was given to me brand new as my cousin won it at a raffle and he already had a proper one on his bass boat.

It has bumped into rocks and logs a few times but I don't think more than people who have been using trolling motors for several years. Well I launched and then bumped a small rock just off the beach launch and then I noticed it sounded strange. Opened it up with my socket wrench and noticed that a tiny rod that holds two important pieces together broke off and you can see that it was rusted.

Now I have to figure out if I can just get that little rod and fix it or just buy a new trolling motor. Also because as you can see, the shaft of it, which is thick plastic, is shredding apart. That's because when I tighten it, and then keep the weight of my hand on it while moving, it gradually slips down lower and then eventually I have to reset the height and it happens again.

Not sure what I'm doing to abuse this motor but I'm not impressed.

I was in cottage country and this happened Sat. And with three on the boat there's no way I was going to make it to the spot I wanted to on Penetang Harbour so I went to this little cove and we caught dinks. Couldn't be bothered to go again two more days if I don't have the motor, especially since Penetang area isn't like Muskoka where there's millions of lakes, big and small, to choose from and would keep my interest if I had to paddle.

Shear pin designed to give way when striking an object. You should be able to get a couple new ones At Rockys in Orillia or aikmans sporting goods in Mississauga. As for the shaft, l don't know what to say to that. I have never seen one damaged like that. Perhaps pull the adjustment screw and see if it has a burr on the end?? Good luck!

As for the shaft, what you are tightening is just a tension screw, not to set the height. There is another adjustable collarthat sets the level. Looks like yours is still tightened just under the motor head .

you can buy new pins at a marine store or you may even be able to make one if you know how, as for the shaft, i have no idea man

interesting. so is the tension screw just to allow how easy it is to turn the motor?

it's pissing rain right now in burlington so i can't go to my car and look at it. soon i'll go have a look though.

anyway, i may buy a 50lb thrust motor for $279+ tax since this one was free and plus this one is only 30lb and i hate getting stuck in weeds and lily pads. this simply can't get through. i'm hoping a 50lb will do the job and get me to spots faster. i also have a pretty high capacity battery so i shouldn't be running it dry with the bigger motor.

Yes Thats what screw is for. Honestly your shaft looks broken from running aground while the motor is right down.
That shearpin should be about 3 bucks. Call aikmans for it. Hes in the hurontario and Dundas area

thx for the suggestions. aikmans has the pin for 80 cents. wish i had realized this beforehand that it makes good sense to carry a backup with you. such a small yet significant part.

shaft order and labour could be between 58 and 70 bucks + tax. not sure yet if i want to do that or just buy the new one. i'll put it off for now as i'm pretty sure that shaft will last the summer.

Minn Kota lists a limited lifetime warranty for their motor shafts on the website. You need to be the original purchaser. Get your cousin to take it in for service!
