I was just wondering what size hooks are people using for floating dew worms for steelhead. I know for roe bags and some other baits u would normally use a very tiny hook like size 10-16 but live worms don't stay on to well. is it working for u guys or what.

small peices of worm i guess or thread the worm onto the line
tried both threading it on works well but not much hook exposed and small pieces don't work
Gotta have a tail for action IMO

Size 6 or something along those lines - on the larger end of the scale I suppose

ok sounds good the reason I ask is because I am under the impression that the fish want really small hooks for the most part.. I don't know i'm used to other fish where hook size isn't as crucial apparently from what I hear

The fish don't know what a hook is, they only see the bait ( how I see it anyways ). Not saying you can use gigantic bass hooks with a 1" plastic on it however there is no need to use size 16's, you will have people who agree and people who will disagree with this statement so use what works best for you. The smallest size hook I use is 10 or 8?

I always mentally argue with myself when I'm fishing back and forth between roe and worms searching for a pattern...
I hate trying to get a dewie on a 12 hook, and when you do, your worm is vulnerable to slipping off the hook.

I think I'll look around for some decent #8 baitholder hooks or something

When you do use a small hook and a dewie, don't be afraid to give the fish an extra moment to chow down before setting. Make sure they get the whole thing in.

this is my dilemma basically as well I usually end up re tying a new hook each time

and yes ive thought of carrying two rods and usually do but its not always possible... I like to travel as light as possible

I use either #4 or 6 Raven specialist hooks. Usually #6 because thats what I use for beads as well. The worm covers up most of the hook anyways. With roe I use # 10 specialist or #10 Daiichi Salmon egg hook.

I'll use a #10 but only usually use half worm, seems to work pretty good for me when I do use worms. Whatever you feel more confident using go with it.

The trouble with hooks is that there is no industry standard when it comes to sizing hooks so one companies size 6 will be the same as another companies size 10. so saying a size 6 Raven Specialist is definitely the way to go when discussing hooks.

I prefer to use a whole worm, hook it twice (size 6-8 hook) then thread it onto the line so it sits just above the hook. This way it floats naturally (not like a bait ball) and no steelhead can resist that presentation
