worms are the best thing to use if all u have is a hook and line. i too have had alot of good luck with worms,
lots of trout will hit worms all year long, (i find best in summer)

i had landed 5 rainbows last summer, one was over 5 pounds.
small creek in paris.

okay cool thanks for telling me, but what I'm wondering is if I am fishing water with panfish in it, can I keep them away and catch something else or Is worms only good for waters with larger fish only in it?

its hard to say really, i geuss it depends on how deep the water is,
if you could get your worm to sink fast, before the smaller ones nab it.

when i fish for trout, i always get shiners biting. i usaly just yank it away before they get hooked, or just lit it sit on bottom untill they leave.
its real tricky, id say selective fishing in a way... lol

bigger the bait bigger the fish.

only problem is the small ones will agressively try to take a bigger bait and give you false sense of feeling.

Your best bet is use plastic worms that resemble the real ones in form and length. I've caught bass like that, but it would probably be more effective to use them under a float in a river with a tiny bit of current to give it some action, otherwise it's just a lump of plastic lying there.

I grew up fishing with worms, and have caught almost everything on worms at one point or another! Bass, Trout, Carp, Eel, Catfish, Salmon, American Shad, Pike, Suckers, and many others! Worms are the universal freshwater bait in my opinion. When all else fails, a good old worm will never let you down!

Worms are probably one of the GREATESS NATURAL BAITS in the HISTORY of the WORLD!
Here in Ontario, where we are blessed with so many varieties of fish ... you never know whats gonna hit.

The only "problem" I've ever occured with Worms is this:

If you are specifically targeting lets say: TROUT (Rainbows) and using worms, you may have to go through:

Suckers
Bass
Pike
Chubs
Carp
PANFISH
Bowfins
Walleye (Pickrel)

... the occassional Snapping Turtle (LOL)

Before you get the trout.

Love the worm, it will never fail you.

Will Musky go for worm, or only pike?

You're going to need more than a worm to get a good sized pike let alone a musky.
Agreed, the only pike I have ever caught on worms were hammerhandles. I've never caught a sizeable pike on a worm although I've fished with worms in many waters where I knew they were.

Alfie.

My friend's first big bass was on a worm and floater. Seems that there are just more panfish around so they rush to the worm.
