Do you need a fishing license for catching "garbage" fish?

I know that the Ontario Ministry of Environment issues a list of sports fishes you can keep and what amounts if you have a sports or conservation license. However, do you need a fishing license if you go catch-and-keep fishing for trash fish like carp, bullheads, sheepsheads, burbot, etc. or any other fish not listed in that handbook?

Reefrunner is correct. However, to the best of my knowledge, there are three ways a resident of Ontario can fish without a license.
1. If you are under 18 / over 65
2. If you are aboriginal (native indian) and have a card to prove it
3. If you own the property (ie. personal trout pond on private property) you're fishing on
Also, I think the first week of July is license exempt for all residents. I think it's called Family Fishing Week, but during that week all other regulations apply. (limits, bait, ect.)

Thanks for the feedback. I do have a conservation license but whenever I go fishing I see foreign-looking people fishing for carp and I wonder if they have a license or think they don't need one because they are only going after carp.

Hey! I love them!

Always giant familys near where I fish aiming for sunfish and if they take alot of sunfish that means more bass! (you can never make sunfish extinct they are like 20 sunfish for every bass lol

Yeah, I caught a baby sunfish a couple of days ago on a number 4 mepps, annoying fish.

Thanks for adding the 3 caveats where a license is not required Joel25. Didn't know about the private pond, most interesting.

Would you drive without a drivers license? If you answered yes to this question you are an idiot! Enough said, no brainer!

I drove a go kart without a license, most would consider it a "garbage" car.

Were these people fishing with Mickey Mouse Ears and cameras around their necks? Did they have Hawiian shirts on with socks and sandles? Did you see luggage stacked up on the shore? Passports? Duty Free Bags?

What in the world would make you think they were fishing without a licence, let alone being a foreigner?
Especially in the GTA!!

Im pretty sure the only thing a C/O is going to ask for is the valid fishing licence.
Nationality has absolutley nothing to do with it.

At least it shouldnt.

Oh and in the carps defence...carp fishing is a sports in itself.

my 2 cents

Yes, but that was on a private track, was it not? Fishing a private pond allows the owner to make his own regulations!

Also if you have a handicap parking permit you can fish without a licence, and sport licence limits apply.

Foreign looking people ?

How do you define foreign i am assuming you live in Toronto.. Aren;t we all foreign looking ? lol..

So because they look foreign you think that they may not have fishing licenses and because they were fishing for Carp it only strengthened your resolve...

Wow.. stupidity..
