I just purchased a Lowrance Elite 4x HDI and I wanted to know if the down imaging will work if I mount it on the inside of the boat. I have a four wins inboard and I don't want to make any holes in the fiberglass to install it. Does anyone know if it will work? or does it have to be mounted outside?

Thanks for the help.

it will not work if u mount it so its inside the boat. A thru hull transducer means u have to drill a hole through the bottom of your boat. On the transom you can either mount it directly with holes or recent trends use a stern saver / stern mount. Lots of ways of going about depending on your use (high speed, cruising, imaging, style of fishing, etc) best to research and do it right the first time. Alot of sites and forums on this topic.

Many transducers can be mounted to shoot through the hull and don't require cutting holes in the boat. I was going to mount a humminbird 597 DI transducer to shoot through the hull of my kayak, but I was told by humminbird that the signal quality would be fine for standard sonar, but the down imaging would be quite degraded. At least this saved me $160 for a spare transducer. You can buy a scupper mount from lowrance meant for kayaks though. I opted to leave my down imaging unit on the boat and use a cheap lowrance black and white that I had kicking around on the kayak. I have heard lowrance DI units are subject to the same signal degredation when mounted to shoot through the hull.
