Hey y'all, I'm going salmon fishing for the first time (Port Hope) and was wondering if the fish coming in through Lake Ontario are safe to eat. All opinions welcomed!

I'm still alive, so they must be okay. I go with my gut (pun intended). If the fish looks 'off' I won't touch it. If it's bright, clean, and relatively stink free I will consume it.

Would love to hear how others determine if they'll eat it or not.

We had this discussion a few weeks ago, somewhere in the forum.

I've eaten fish from Lake O, I'm pretty sure they're healthier than eating a can of Chunky's. I prefer to harvest smaller fish for the table.

Hi, I went to port hope a couple of times and there's always a lot of people fishing there . You can also try fishing at port darlington if port hope is no good for you.

I was fishing this weekend and one of the guys there said if its dark/black he wont eat it

he said if its green its safe to eat.

I eat fish out of Lake O. I might think twice about eating one from a heavily industrialized area, and I certainly wouldn't eat a salmon heading up river to spawn as it is my understanding that their flesh is basically rotting at that point....but I ate a few out of the wellington area early in the summer and they were delicious. Just try to eat the smaller ones and don't overdo it.
