I went 0/1 today, but ill get to that.
There are salmon in the river right now and it will only keep getting better, but at the moment it is hard to find these fresh silver fish, but if you do it's all yours for the taking 8)
I started at the bridge in Erindale and went up till I reached the fish sanctuary at Highway 403. There was no sign of fish anywhere there, but I got lost and ran into a deer.
I quickly realized if I don't want to get skunked I better take my efforts bellow the dundas bridge where there's less pressure on the fish.
So I got to the bridge and had to get my jeans wet to get further down (first time I went there) till I got to someones property and bellow it there was slower deeper water with two guys on the other side and a female chinook right beside me! I let the guys know there's a fish there which was a bad idea because the two guys totally hogged it and kept throwing their float fishing rig at it and I was just watching for 15 minutes! one of the guys took off their float and got in in the mouth!
After they landed it they quickly released it so it can spawn. Now it was my turn. I put my storm hotntot in front of it's face and got it to react a bit, but it was too tired and I eventually lost sight of it. So I went further down bellow the bend you can see on the map bellow.
In this pool there was another female chinook and it was easy to spot with the low clear water, except this one kept moving around and gave me a bit of a workout. Then 3 other guys with center pins show up and all of us tried our luck on it. I eventually got it on a marabou jig bellow a float, but it got off! There was one guy in the pack around my age that had some serious float fishing skill and would hook it on almost every drift! He eventually got it good and landed it.
They tried releasing it, but it was dead way before. So we made a deal. I take the salmon and they take the eggs. I gave them scissors and they cut it open and took the eggs. I tried putting the salmon in a bag I had, but it ripped! Great now i'm stuck with a salmon that I can't keep. I let it drift down. I had to. There was no other choice!
Here is a map of where all the action was taking place, as you can see it's bellow the dundas bridge.
These are the two spots the fresh salmon were caught.
Here is a picture of the ice breakers looking down from north.
Looking up from south.
The bridge at Erindale.
The pool bellow the icebreakers that can hold fish.
One of the hotspots.
Some fresh salmon that died recently.
The ice breakers.
Alright man! Today I learned a lot and got to see one of the lucky guys float rigs up close
It's simply a group of closely placed splitshots bellow a float, then a 4 foot leader to a fly.
The two spots shown are KILLER. You just have to be there when the salmon are running. I can't wait to get back out there this weekend!
I hope I solved the Erindale mystery of finding fish and put you on top of some!
