I fish at brickworks a lot, and every time i fish there, I always get people who harass me for fishing, telling me that im destroying the fish population, illegally fishing, and other negative remarks.

I was fishing there today, and a group of woman with kids were harassing me for hooking up a catfish by the upper lip, and making its lip bleed. I told them theres nothing I can do about it and it does no permanent harm to the fish. They wouldnt listen, and they followed me around for about 10 min, harassing me about how im killing all the fish I get, torturing it, having no respect for nature, etc, and eventually trying to force me to leave because apparently im a bad example for kids. They left after a few more minutes when they realized they were wasting their time.

I dont keep any of the fish I get (never took a single fish from there), I take all my trash with me, and its not illegal (at least I dont think it is. Dont see any signs telling me not to fish).

Am I wrong to be fishing there? Why do I get harassed so much?

its so annoying.... :(

Some people are plain and simple pricks.
Tell them to get lost or you will call the cops and they can be charged with harrassment.
Ask them where they live or where is their car.. That will stun the crap out of them .hahaha

Some people are just like that, for me, it's not worth my time fighting with these crazies, I rather be fishing(!), so I just don't go to places like that. There are a lot of more angler friendly places in the city, with some nice fish. Try places like the islands, or high park... When fishing in a place like Toronto, where fishing almost got banned, every little thing will tick a person off...

Is it private property? Cause if it is they might not allow fishing... if I were you I would check on that.

I would not suggest this, fishing was almost banned along the waterfront and we, as anglers have to be friendly, understanding and cooperative. Be polite, explain the situation and perhaps go with them to talk to someone who works there.

I dont know about private property, but I see some of the staff there while im fishing. I greet all of them and they never tell me to go away or anything so I assume I am allowed to fish. I also see other anglers there so its probably ok.

I have been going to high park before i found brickworks, but it takes an hour longer to get there, so im trying to stick to brickworks. Besides, high park is kinda over-fished.......even the sunfish are all puny compare to what they have at brickworks. Way too many people taking fish from there.

ya.......I dont threaten people lol. I do explain, but people refuse to listen. They just think im making stuff up to suit my own selfishness and look for an excuse to fish there. Staff there are hard to find, and most often, they dont have time for petty fights like this.

I wish they can put a sign saying "Fishing allowed".........every time I get bothered I can just point to it and make people shut up.......:p

So your fine on legality probably. If they continue to harass you just walk away and pretend to leave, then go back... High park has some monsters if you know where to fish... Where abouts are you? I probably know of spots closer to you, that I wouldn't mind sharing...

Ya, high park has monsters. I have a good general idea where they lurk, and I have scored 5lb+ pike/bass there. But the predatory fish are very few, and often very small.
I live at victoria park and lawrence. Im really close to ET seton park, but I have no clue how to access the pond there. Scouted the place 3 times but didnt find a way to get close to the water.
The other 2 areas I can think of to fish would be either Humber marshes or Rogue marshes, but I heard humber is pretty bad, and rogue is not as good as it used to be due to some construction for habitat restoration or something.

I handline A LOT so im kinda picky about the location.

Ashbridges Bay. Caught Pike and Brown trout there.

This really seems odd to me. I read about this sorta thing happening what seems to be a lot on OFF. This time of year I don't run into people as often as I am normally off the trail or in the boat. In the late spring and early fall when I am sometimes fishing areas with more people, more times than not I have people come and talk to me. I have NEVER had anyone say anything negative whatsoever, often they are surprised that there are in fact fish populations in water very close to where they live. They normally inquire as to what I am fishing for and what setup I am using. I don't mean anglers I mean people with little to no knowledge of fishing just wanting to chat. Some people will stay and talk for upward of an hour, I in fact find people coming and conversing with me annoying at times and I am attempting to relax and clear my mind. I suppose I should count my blessing and be happy they are so friendly.

I am not even sure how I would react if I was put in the situation Usernamehere was put in. The people he is referring to remind me of what I like to call "yuppies", the kind of people that hardly ever get out of their downtown condo and think they know everything about food, animals and the wild. Talk like they are saving the world by using some recyclable crap while driving around in a lexus SUV they just gota trade in every year for a new one. I now live in Grey county but there was I time I lived in the GTA. when I moved there I was intrigued by this odd breed of human, living in their small small worlds. My run ins with yuppies has for the most part been negative. That led us to the sport of "Yuppie busting", I will not go into detail but it included the use of powerful two stroke machines, beaver hats, plaid, beards and an unwavering defiance to conform to the way of the ever growing urban sprawl.

Something I have found is the more scraggly and long your beard is the less people will approach you. You could also employ the use of full hunting camouflage while angling, hunters=gun owners=scared yuppies.

It doesn't matter who you are, just walking up to someone who is within their rights as in individual and is not breaking the law and chirping them is just wrong. Them following you around is harassment and puts them in the wrong. This sorta thing many places will get you a good old fashioned beating. I understand that is was a woman with children so that's obviously out of the question. I may have just got about an inch from their face and responded with a string of incredibly obscene words lol

There's a reason I like to stay far from the city, I don't belong.

lol

Lol indeed! Thx for the morning laugh!!

I have this printed out and carry it with me, haven't had to haul it out yet, but it's ready:

Fish & Wildlife Act 1997

Obstruction of hunting, trapping or fishing

13. (1) A person shall not interfere with lawful hunting, trapping or fishing by,

a) tampering with traps, nets, bait, firearms or any other thing used for hunting, trapping or fishing;

b) placing himself or herself in a position, for the purpose of interfering, that hinders or prevents hunting, trapping or fishing; or

c) engaging in an activity, for the purpose of interfering, that disturbs or is likely to disturb wildlife or fish.

Notice without authority

2) A person shall not purport to give notice that entry to premises is prohibited for the purpose of hunting or fishing or that hunting or fishing is prohibited on premises unless the person has authority to give the notice. 1997, c. 41, s. 13.
Sounds as if they weren't going quite as far as what is outlined in 13b, but letting them know they are coming close to doing something illegal may scare them off.

You could also ask if they are vegetarians. If they say yes, then tell them that at least you respect them for having the courage of their convictions, might defuse the situation a bit if you show some respect. If they say no, then tell them that every time they eat meat they are responsible for the death of an animal, but they haven't got the guts to do the dirty work themselves. Then just say "So you can ____ my ___ and ____off." (insert your own choice of words) I have little respect for phonies.

Had a guy rage at me for putting this bass on the boardwalk to remove the hook. Apparently I had to keep the fish in the water and remove the hook there, cause il kill it by pulling it out of the water for a few seconds. Looked like he was going to have a heart attack by the time I put the bass back in the water.

Or maybe next time just tell the lady..."I fish for food...but if it bothers you a lot, they have this new PRETZEL BUN Burgers at wendy's i'd like to sink my teeth on but they're not as free as this fish..."

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you. I don't know a pot of places you could fish with a hand line unless you could cast it pretty far, because these spots are shore spots so you need to cast into some deeper water, I'll pm you though anyway soon.

I was actually planning on checking the place out tomorrow morning. Hopefully these people work and I'll be left alone

people are idiots, and its usually the more opinionated they are the less informed as well, best bet is to either let it go and keep fishing, or tell them to get lost and that they're harassing you.

I'm glad to never have experienced anything like that, I try to avoid conflict in general and especially when I'm fishing but I could see myself getting mad if this happened to me, also the situation usernamehere had with his bass, that's just ridiculous.

I would almost want to kill the catfish right in front of her and her children out of spite, then proceed to clean it edit: almost, i wouldn't want to upset children just because their mother is and idiot, but I wonder how she'd react if someone did this
