Have you ever fished the Beaver (Georgian Bay) for skamania, if you get a chance to go man, do it! These fish are powerhouses, you have to put your time in but believe me its worth it. I fished 3 days, hard, before I hit my first one. I have seen them blow guys apart before they knew what happened.....sweet! Bill a.k.a Troutslayr

I understand that skamania is a variety of steelhead. How can you distinguish one from 'normal' steelhead(apart from any fighting characteristics). Or is that the only kind that run on the Beaver?

No the beaver gets a run of salmon and trout. I like fishing the pols and runs down from the dam close to the mouth..Identifying skamania can be tricky sometimes, they are simular to steelhead, but their body is long and lean, big shoulders (all muscle), the tail is more square shaped (the part you grab when tailing a fish) is thicker than a trout, they are very silver (chrome), and their head is more bullet shaped..they can also handle warmer water temps, I have caught them in june (float fishing).. Trust me when you hook one you know it, they are amazing!...I hope this helps, I could go on with the history of the Skamania but it would take too long..anymore questions let me know...Bill a.k.a Troutslayr

So when was this alleged Skamania caught???? Must have been years ago, as the Skamania was a hybrid fish developed by man and stocked into Georgian bay in OwenSound to boost the summer tourist fishing season, as the fish ran up the river in July. They stopped manufacturing, and stocking the Skamania many years ago, and they did not naturally reproduce.
Some clubs in Michigan still stock these fish into Lake Huron, and it hasbeen reported that some of the fish have been caught in the Soo.
