Went out today in hopes of bettering my casting since I'm still a pretty crappy fly fisherman, the only thing I expected to hook into was Chubs. I went out anyway joking to my brother that there's really no point in me bringing a net because the chances of me hooking a Trout on the fly are slim and none. I brought it anyway just in case and headed on my way.

I arrived at a pool where I knew about 6 Trout were stacked in it and began to fish, on my second cast.... BOOM a big silver bullet emerged from the depths and hammered my fly and I was on! I fought the fish for about 7 minutes until it finally was defeated. I had a real hard time landing it though as it was too big for my net but I was able to get it in anyways. I'd say she was about 5 lbs.

Within 20 seconds I had all my pictures.

Now came the hard part I knew the fish was dead tired from the fight so I wanted to get it back ASAP but she annihilated the fly and the hook dug deep into her mouth so it was hell to get out... fast forward about 1.5 minutes later.... got the hook out and was finally able to release her. It took a while to revive her but she was still able to survive and swim away OK.

After that I fished for about 20 more minutes but I had to get home to throw some pizzas in the oven for my brother :p.

Great weather, first trout on the fly and pizza :D The day couldn't get any better!

Know the euphoria...but the excitement got the better of you man...
bow on the ground sucks...

Keep at it man...you're pretty fly for a white guy... :D

What do you mean by in the water :p I had to get it out so I could unhook it and the pictures were snapped in a matter of seconds. I was also fishing alone so I had to lay it down to get the hook out as no one was able to assist me....

Ignore him...

Keep the fish in the water for the pic. Dont ignore it. Do it
Doesn't have to do anything we tell him... If he decided it was best for him and the fish to put it on the ground so he could take a photo and keep the fish in control, good. Would rather see a fish kept under control on the ground then flapping around on the rocks under 2 inches of water.

Do what you want to, not what others do Guiga10.

gee noob--nice of you to get a law degree without telling us cause you seem to be everyones savior when it comes to my posts---why the hell would a fish flopping in 2 inches of its own habitat be worse that laying on the ground--completely foreing to the fish with ZERO potential for air in its lungs...???? this is a young man that needs to know that fish live in the water for a reason and we need to try and keep them there----seriously bro--if you wanna take little runs at me do it in PM once you get out of high school or maybe just stick to greeting the new members at the door.

no one ever said he wasn't to be congratulated for the fish--just taught that they should stay in the water...where they live not on the shore slowly dying ---and FLOPPING IN GRAVEL AND SAND--in order to get a photo

Like I said 2 times before the fish needed to be taken out to get the hook out and since it was out I had the opportunity to to snap some pics, the pictures literally took 20 seconds MAX and the fish was back in. It's pretty hard to take a picture when you have a camera in one hand and a 5 lb fish in the other while trying to dip it in the water so I can make the Trout guys happy, I've never seen a discussion like this when a Bass was laid down..hmmmm. I'm no animal abuser and I try my best to have it out of the water as short as possible, but when it's my first rainbow on the fly of course I'm gonna take pictures. I never said the fish died while trying to revive it or I kept it to eat, I said it was able to survive and swim away OK. Also I would try my best to avoid gravel and sand to lay it down... as seen in the pic the fish was laying on flattened grass.. not gravel and sand.

BTW.. Thanks Noob you're a great guy :).

Well... because with two inches the amount of water it's taking in is very minimal so it's not that beneficial anyway... of course better than on the ground but not savior worthy. Also if there were two 5 lb rainbows, both laid down, one in a small amount of water with lots of rocks and one completely out of water on softer flattened grass. And they were both flopping around ferociously (assuming it just came out), what would be more damaging soft grass bedding, or hard rock surface which could also very likely have some sharp rocks too which could possibly lead to cuts. I'm not trying to call myself a hero but I did what I needed to do in the situation. I'm not gonna lay it in an inch of water so I can call myself an Trout saver, even though it would just provide more difficulty when unhooking it....

Getting a little personal gents...I made the comment, so I suggest any dissenting remarks be directed toward me...
I've posted the "Mental Chewing Gum" thread as an analogy and a reminder to be good custodians of our FINITE resource...
I hope most find this instructive, (some have even taken that as an opportunity for sarcasm)--those (and there are many here) that just don't get it, I have no time for and don't care to share time on the water with...

This is getting old...apologies for the bitch...

As I said G...congrats, great to get the first one on the fly!!
(btw all my photos are from solo excursions on the river....)
