Finally breaking down and getting a centerpin anyone have any suggestions for a first reel? I dont fish big rivers often either. Any input would be great!

try to get an old loomis or tournament drifter those reels are workhorses, i have a sheffield its pretty rugged and a good option if buying new.

Before you fork over $500+ remember it's not mystical engineering bro...it's a spool on a pin...Rob Marquette fo Riverkeeper will tell you that.
And don't be swayed by the KP vs. Islander debate either as that's flogging a dead horse IMO...I have been quite impressed with NADO's setup...also, the price on the Steelheader cp from Amund is very good...nice ported back plate.
If you want to stand out in the crowd....well...Frogwater, Paine Falls...Ron Gardiner's are untouchable $1400+
Good luck

paid 50 bucks for my sheffield from a hock shop as a quick replacement to my stanton custom and fell in love with it

a local tackel shop has a pretty good sale on right now, aventa rod 13'6" and aventa float reel with backing and mono $150, I think it's a great price and a great start up combo, if you wanna sell it next season, you probably won't loose money

that is a good deal, I already have 2 float rods but my buddy is looking for his first. Where is this?

my buddy bought streamside and after one day at the beaver it was fucho, needed new bearings and every screw retorqued....i gave him some locktite and no problems since

I've put my okuma aventa through 2 seasons now of nook and a winter/spring of steel, still holds up like its new. Just treat gear with care and you're set.

Don't buy a streamside... They look, feel and spin like a bad carnival ride. Cheap in price, cheap in performance.

Go Okuma Aventa, or the Admunson as CC mentioned.

I've never used the Admunson, but feels rock solid, tough.
