Frozenfire and I attempted to fish for crappie last Thursday after our classes were over around noon. We checked Adeline Park in Keswick and the marina at the end of Bathurst; both were still iced over. At the Holland River, we weren't stopped by ice as most of it was melted, but the current of the water was moving rapidly and high. The water looked quite murky. We assumed this was because of snow melt from the surrounding land, and also mainly from the pumps that continuously pump meltwater out from the agricultural lands that surround this river. Large chunks of ice floated down the river at an alarming speed. We didn't even bother wetting our lines as we knew that we'd have trouble with the current and the floating ice as well.
Here are some pictures of the conditions at the time taken from the car.
Frozenfire and his main fishing buddy went for another try at the Holland River on Saturday morning at 7am to see similar conditions. He said he saw many other people fishing there. A few on the shores and a number of boats out trying their luck under the bridge. They fished for about an hour or so and called it quits seeing as no action had taken place.
Equipment used included ultralight gear with 4 lb test, slip float with 1/16th oz jig head, rigged with 1.5 inch tube.
We're hoping on some action within a week or so! =).
Directions: Take hwy 404 north until it comes to an end. Take Green Lane west to Yonge st, then head north to holland landing. You'll come over a bridge and will see lots of cars parked off to the side of Canal Rd (right after the bridge to your left hand side) fishing if the time is right.
Here is a map of the area we fished:
