First ever bead rig set up, how did i do

Hey guys, so ive been fishing since i was 5 years old, (23 now) and i always thought I was great...until i found out that I was doing EVERYTHING wrong with my trout set up lol. Explains why Id catch 2-3 fish while others were pulling in 10+.

Anyways, with some great help from a basspro employee, and online research, I managed to finally finish my FIRST ever bead rig.

Obviously I wont be fishing the float that close, but its just to show you how it will look like.

I would like your opinions and suggestions. Also, how high should i poistion the sinker above the bead? I dont want the trout seeing that.

SET UP SPECS

browning six rivers 9'6 rod
pflueger president reel
15lb braided power pro line
7' flurocarbon leader 5.6lbs
size 12 red hook

Dude, grab a bucket of water or something and see how many split shots it takes to balance the float down to the colored tip. I can tell that one tiny one won't be enough

Setup looks good.

Personally I'd run a longer piece of leader, I usually use 18-24".

The closest split shot I have is over a foot above the bead. Just remember to not have the bead more then 2" away from the hook or you risk hooking the fish in the body or the eye.

You want to have the bead presented close to the bottom of the river as it will simulate a loose egg floating down stream and bouncing around on the bottom.

It is hard to tell in your Photo , but the bead should be about 1.5 to 2 inches from your hook.

This is all wrong i tell you. :mrgreen: No, just listen previous coments and you will be OK definitly more splitshots an make bead closer to hook.

thanks a lot for the feedback guys, I moved the bead 2 inches from the hook, and i will add more sinkers, I just didnt want to put more until i hit a river and see how the water conditions are.

a tall glass of water will do the trick

haha Ive always wanted to have a giant 100ft aquarium with trout in it, maybe one day when i can afford it and learn more about marine biology

in the mean time, It too me 2 friggin hours to pretie 4 more bead leaders and 2 more regualr changeable leaders for spinners and such. Man this is tideious lol

I got a good tip on here in fall, two finger width lengths between hook n bead. Works good for me.

Bead peg until you can find a cheaper method. I used toothpicks but I'd rather a softer material. So I just use bead pegs. You can find the. At your local tackle shop

hahah yeah i was bewildered too! usally they are either rude jerks working at the fly shop...or just regular non fisherman employees. this guy was very nice and shared "secrets" with me, also helped me choose a rod and reel, leader and line. He says he charters for salmon and trout in the summer at lake ontario. Great guy, showed me some pics of nice trout he got at niagara few weeks back

These guys have given some great tips.

When I tie up my shot lines I figure out how much weight it takes to balance the float correctly then I just pour the split shot onto a scale and weight it.

For floats 10gr+ I just stagger some shot then add some big ones as required.

Tying up those bad buys can sure take a while eh?
When I pretie my shot lines and leaders I simply wrapp them around a $1 piece of pipe insulation from crappy tire with slits cut in it, works great. Plus If you put a piece of masking tape and label difference weights and lengths.

I also always snell my hook if I don;t have a bait loop tied in it.
