First fly tied

So i got a vice and some fly tying materials recently, today tied up my first one, went with a bucktail streamer pattern.Going to try to go after the smb this year using my fly gear out of my kayak.Man can't tell you how many times i broke the thread off and don't even want to mention how long it took and man that whip finish tool, i'll figure it out better.Looking to tie some more of this pattern and gotta make up some buggers as well, came out half decent for first one.Here are a couple of shots.

I ended up having to buy a new bobbin as the one that came with my initial kit had a rough edge that would continually break the thread - very frustrating!

That's a solid tie! Good job. You'll probably hear this plenty of times to come but try not to crowd the eye.

The thread breaking, whip finish tool issues and things taking 10 times longer than any video you watch are just training wheels stuff. You'll get the hang of how much tension you can put on the thread before it snaps quite quickly. Keep an eye on it hitting the hook point as that's the main reason why a thread weakens and snaps on you.

so got to tie up a bunch more of similar style bucktail streamers in some different color patterns, getting use to using that whip finish tool,was able to put one of them to good use recently fishing for white bass which are migrating and spawning on my home waters know.Been using my 9' 8 weight setup with sink tip and having lots of fun,even managed a couple of decent sized ones.Gonna bring my 9' 6 weight along as it should be fun targeting the white bass on it as well.Can't wait for smb and lmb opener, thanks for the responses.Here are a couple of shots of the white bass on the fly.

If you still have thread breaking issues, remember that as you wind your thread around the shank, it's also twisting. If you allow this to build up, the thread just breaks. If you look at the thread you will see the twists. This is easy to avoid, every so often just allow the bobbin to free hang a bit. It will start to unwind, you can help it along if you want. When the thread looks even again,carry on. Problem solved.

Nice first tie dude!!!! I have tied more than I care to remember. Love every single one!!!! If I may. Build some more bulk around the neck make it flare out. Use 3 thread if you are starting out. It won't break. Don't buy the five dollar bobbin. But the twenty dollar one. You are in for a world of fun man!!! keep tying dude!!!

Nice job, you have a knack for it, if you keep breaking thread there's a couple things to try, you can get a bobbin with a ceramic tube, this can help. Another thing is to use a very small diameter superline, take an empty spool and fill it with the superline. This may make pureists cringe but when tying big patterns it works well!...
