First Time Ice Fishing

Hey Guys,

Second time posting I think besides initially introducing myself. Haven't had much to write about, I mostly do fly fishing when I can and it doesn't seem like there are a lot of fly fishers around here.

Tried out ice fishing for the first time at Island Lake in Orangeville this past Saturday. First time going so didn't quite know what to expect. People there are really friendly and the huts are extremely warm. t-shirt warm.

Went with a buddy a mine and we both caught a small pike each. For those of you who have been to island lake you know the size of Pikes I'm talking about. around 15-20 inchs max. Didn't take any pictures unfortunately, but then again not many things to take pictures of that day.

(Funny part was when my buddy and I hooked the same fish. This pike took both of our bait one after another. We were pretty much pulling each other back and fourth for awhile before we realized it wasn't a big fish and it was just us hooked on each other.)

Will be heading up Keswick soon to do some Ice fishing for bigger pikes, jumbo perch, lake trout and whitefish. Will definitely have some pictures after that trip.

I just wanted to say for anyone who has never ice fished before....Island lake is a good start. Not too far of a drive and they have everything set up for you when you arrive.

:lol: That's hilarious! I've had it happen still fishing where I see my rod start bouncing and I run to it and set the hook only to find that it's someone else who had crossed my line and is reeling in... But NEVER what you just described! LOL!

Hey thanks for the report. I've been there in the summer only. Yes I know exactly the size pike you're talking about. Still, it sounded like a good time you had there.

Glad to see you back. I hope you have a good trip up at Cook's Bay. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed!

i got interested in fly fishing a few months ago, i know lots about it but haven't actually tried it since i just got a rod at christmas. i got into it because i make my own flies. just out of curiosity, what type of fish would you say is the most fun to catch while fly fishing?

hey Bala,

I just got into fly fishing myself last year. I have two different rods (small fish/larger fish) and to tell you the truth....Bass are really fun to catch on a fly rod. Trout are great also. Hooked a salmon on Credit River this past year and that was pretty intense also (would of been better if I was able to get the fish).

I find it depends on the rod you have for the fish your catching. I use my 6/7 weight on small fishes like bass and even little sun fish. I find no matter the fish you catch on a fly rod, you will get an entertaining battle. I've even used my 6/7 rod on small trout and pike at island lake. My 8 weight rod I use for salmon and larger trout also.

ASK A LOT OF QUESTIONS! I think I bugged everyone I saw with a fly rod for the first while to get tips.

With fly fishing I can cast all day and not even complain about not catching a fish or bit. Worst day of fishing is better then a day of work.

i have a nine foot five weight rod but the weight of the rod is all about how much the line weighs per thirty feet, my five weight will due fine as i intend to use small flies, i'm glad that any fish will be entertaining because at my cottage i can catch fifty rockbass in twenty minutes and not get any thrill at all, i also plan to trie fly fishing at a great walleye spot and i know that catching a walleye on a fly rod is said to be an amazing fly fishing experience. and i might be doing this as early as late february cause this spot never freezes over :lol:

U can pull a decent 30-40" pike outta that lake on each and every trip no problem. If all u ever get is 15" man u need to know more about the lake. It's small but defined.

My biggest out of there is 44".

That lake is absolutly loaded with Pike, bass, crappie. man that 15" comment drove me nuts nuts nuts bud sorry u must be new to the lake.

I had no idea there were anything but dink pike in there. (I've only targetted bass mind you)

I don't take many pixs but unfortunalty as we caught the monster bottom of the lake we had no choice but to kill it "tourney" and so I do have a pix of that beast the 44"er.

I'll find it and bring it to work get it scanned & uploaded next week.

Sorry I had to kill it frig I hate killing things especially that big I do strictly C&R so forgive me on that one.

Yeah I hear you, I don't kill any fish either - but I think they actually want you to kill pike from there because they get into the Credit river system and threaten the resident trout population. Also, pike aren't supposed to be in there. Someone illegally dumped a few pike in there a while back and look what happened 8)

I can't wait to see the picture! Now that I think about it, maybe you caught one of the original pike that was illegally put in there, judging by it's size... :lol:
