Hey, This is my first year fishing. I've gone before, but just with borrowed stuff. My buddy is into fishing and knows quite a bit, but we're both unsure about how good this rod/reel is.

Its from crappy tire, on sale from $80 to $40, and im not a hardcore fisher (obviously). Just looking for something that wont break catching upto 8lbs (if that ever happens)

this is the combo i'm looking at, its a Zebco Recon 3 Spin Combo, 6-ft 6-in
http://www.canadiantire.ca/browse/p...6891118495&assortment=primary&fromSearch=true

let me know your opinions,
thanks,
Jeff

as for first rod its pretty good, i not a fan of im8 or any other graphite rods, its liter that fiberglass but i like fiberglass more, 99% it wont brake on hook set,
but for $40 give it a shot.

Whatever setup you buy will be good enough for whatever fish you fish for.

I remember back when I go started with fishing.... I bought one of those uber cheap no name rod and reel from CanadianTire combo for $19.99
Few times I've used it to catch 15+lb salmon. Rod didn't break. I sure stressed it but it worked.

My buddy is in the same shoes as you and i took him to walmart and he got a really good shimano rod and reel for 40 bucks 7ft medium heavy and man thats a good rod for the buck. Very sterdy and nice and light.

Ya, it's a good rod buddy. It's will work, and as long as your haven a good time! Cheep to boot.

haha, nice username Marc, two new members from bowmanville

cool thanks everyone, i'll be picking it up this week

Jeff

Thats good for starters, just keep in mind, the lower-end reels not rods, tend to brake a lot easier than for say a premium ie: Shimano reel, so in essence you get what you pay for. My buddy also bought a cdn-tire combo after I warned him about getting not getting a cdn tire combo because theyre known for breaking down. Advised him to goto BPS or Lebaron instead (last August), he shoulda listened. It might've saved him some money ($40-50), I'm not sure if its the same one you bought, we got out to a pond so I could teach him how to fish, 2nd cast, the bail on the reel brakes off, he couldn't even cast LOL, and we just started using it not even a minute earlier. I gave him a big "I TOLD YOU SOO LOL", anyways I got a good chuckle out of it and kept fishing, luckily I brought my 2nd rod & reel for him to use. Just keep that in mind, it might not happen to you but at least you're now aware of that problem with cdn tire combos.

well this one looked and felt good. The way i look at it is, its got a one year warr., and if its going to break, its going to be this year so theres no point in me spending the extra $20 in fuel to get to bass pro if this one will work.

If it does break, i'll return it and go to bass pro then.

Jeff

Yeah keep that combo, but if it brakes you'll know where to go, I just wanted to share that with you, so at least if it were to happen you, it wouldn't be a total piss-off/shock, you'd be expecting it. Btw, his looked great too, until it broke like right after we got there :D In-fact I was quite surprised, because the combo itself looked better than the other ones Ive seen from my local cdn tire. And its good to hear you have a warranty with it, although if it did break, they might ask you send it to the manufactorer instead of cdn tire

oh i appriciate the comment/heads up, and i know CT isnt the best place for top of the line stuff. (i'm a hardcore car guy trying to find another less expencive hobby so im not focusing on my car all the time) and i would never buy anything for my car from canadian tire. So i know theres a decent chance it could break, but for $40, worth a shot i figure.

Jeff

my first rod was 7' ugly stik lite from canadian tire, that was 4 years ago, and im still using it with no problem. on the other hand ugly stik is same everywhere. awsome rod.

ya my buddy Marc (bvillefish2) bought an uglystik from there and he likes it so far, he got an abu garcia reel for it too. not sure the model of it, maybe he'll chime in

The reel is an Abu Garcia Cardinal 100. It's a step down from the Cardinal 800 Series. There both open face reels. I bought the cheeper one because i didn't have the money. Hopefully it will hold up because of the name. The differance between the reels is the 100 has Five ball bearings and high performance gearing advanced osccillation, with instant anti-reverse. The 800 has Nine ball bearings and a sealed duel-bearing-supported Carbon matrix drag.
The Ugly stick is a great rod to fish with. I bought it at CT and it's been worth every penny. It's strong and very sensitive. It's a 6'6'' Medium. It was 10 dollars more at CT but for Jeff, (Bvillefish) and me to drive to Bass Pro it would cost that extra 10 dollars anyways.
I personally think that combo Jeff wants is a good little deal and if anything happens he can take it back within the year! It basically gives him that year to get a feel for things.

thanks for posting that marc, ive read a few posts about ugly stik around here, and im sure they'll appriciate that info

I Picked up the Recon combo as well it looked solid enough but my rod was IM6 so I guess slightly worse graphite not as sensitive The reel has 6 bearings and is pretty smooth it looks like a cheaper version of the Quantum Array not sure if the difference between the two is just the bearing count as the Array has 8 bearings. Anyways as long as you do not abuse your rod and reel by banging it on the boat slamming the car door on it... It should last I have never broken a reel or rod other then the regular wear and tear or accidental break so I don't think you have too much to worry about. The Combo original price is about $80.00 so it should be decent enough it was only marked down to $40.00. So it's not like it was a $40.00 combo it actually is backup to $79.99 pricewise

two words...........UGLY STIK.........althought just about any zebco combo should fulfill your needs... the breaking part is hard tou guarantee unless you use an UGLY STIK

Ugly Stick is ok for Pike and Bass but if you want something more sensitive then Ugly stick won't do. But don't get me wrong Ugly stick is the best all around rod out there for durability.

Anyone ever used Berkley Cherrywood or any of the Rapala Rods just wondering what your thoughts are.

Invest in your reel it's what counts in the end, don't worry so much about the rod.

Every single rod I have broken was been because of a hard core fishing experience tracking into the bush or something and the tip gets snapped off. Cut her back to the next Eye and continue trekking in ha ha ha!

Get a decent reel as you know it will last as for the rod's get a couple of med, heavy action etc.

I don't think you could have said anything quite as English, matches your avatar perfectly.

And shouldn't it be always go down fishing?
