I was wondering what types of fish are active and available during this time of the year in Southern Ontario. We have been having quite balmy temperatures right now (hovering mid-teens) and I was wondering what's good to catch right now. Or should I wait until the weather gets a bit warmer to get a lot of action? Thanks.

Would love to help yeah out on this info, but im just as lost as you. I ususally stick by the MNR's regulations for whats open season and go from there.

Depends where in Southern Ontario your looming at.. I'm in Kitchener and the ponds in Bloomingdale hold crappie, perch, carp, pike, bluegill, sunfish and bass (small and largemouth.. Catch and Release ONLY as not in season).. The Grand and Speed rivers hold pretty much any type of fish available in Ontario (yes, the Grand is just that diverse), Nith river holds walleye, pike, carp, panfish. Just make sure to check regulations for whichever body of water you fish in!

Late April, the 28th, gives me goosebumps already.. Come on trout open lol

I've heard Cout's (spelling) paradise in Hamilton gets loaded with some huge carp in April and May, it's on my to do list this year.

LOL. Haven't you heard there's a carp barrier at the entrance to Cootes ( spelled correctly B) ) to keep the carp out. It works real good too, NOT.
I fish Cootes quite a bit and besides all the carp it also holds some nice channel cats, bowfin, sheephead and the very occasional pike. Some pretty big suckers are also in there as well as a number of kinds of panfish. Some chrome do enter the paradise on their way to spawn at certain times of the year too.

It's not really a ladder, it's supposed to be a barrier that prevents carp from entering Cootes run by The Royal Botanical Garden. Suffice it to say it doesn't work and there are lots of carp in Cootes. You will find that in my past posts, and in future ones too that when I mention the carp barrier it is always followed by the letters L O L. Lol.

The first time I heard about Cootes was at Rainbow sports in Waterloo, I was in getting salmon hooks and my reel respooled and was talking to a guy that was in picking up feeder weights before he headed out to Cootes. So we got to talking and the fact of 30 and 40+ lb carp drives me crazy lol.. Out at my parents trailer (New Hamburg area) the lake at the park has some carp but nothing close to those sizes, the biggest Ive pulled out of the lake was about 6 or 7 lbs.
