I had a fun experience back in the late 70s at Port Dalhousie in the falls (before it became Crime of the Century to fish there).
It was November while the inland trout season was closed, the season was "open all year" in the 12 Mile Creek up to Lakeshore Road aka "the falls" where we were fishing.
So buddy and I are fishing away (we skipped class) and we had two nice rainbows we were keeping for dinner, maybe 7 lbs each. Out of the blue a tall lanky man with greased back hair/Clark Gable mustache and a stocky sidekick approach us and tell us that they are "with the MNR" but as citizens who are "helping them out". No uniforms, no ID. They tell us that the trout are out of season and they are going to confiscate them. We argued that the season is open, read the regs. They wouldn't hear it and took the trout AND wrote us a receipt for them WHICH I STILL HAVE!!!
We were kids, we let them walk all over us. No badge, a crappy station wagon and a receipt! It was so odd.
Years later I would see the "tall lanky one" out at the Maple Leaf Gun Club but i never asked him "what the heck was that all about???"
When we got home we called the outdoor editior for the St. Catharines Standard, Gerry Wolfram, and told him the story. He was dumbfounded.
Oh the odd folk we meet in the pursuit of our passion....
