I would like to start a post about fishing line, I've always used mono my entire life but I've bought some different lines Berkley Fireline(suppose to be braid), Berkley Vanish(fluorocarbon) and Spiderwire original Braid.

So this is what I plan to do with these lines, if anyone has any suggestions, different experiences please reply.

Berkley fireline to be used on a fairly ultralight spincast combo 1 spool with 10# for pike/bass the other spool with 6# for bass/trout. the diameter of this line is suppose to be equal or less then mono 4#.

I initially got the Berkley Vanish 10# to use as a leader for my Spiderwire original Braid but I tried to tie them together and after 30mins gave up I can tie a mono to mono line in less then a min but not this stuff so I gave up. so now I simply plan to use this as a main line for Bass again on a spincast combo.

The spiderwaire braid 10# is on my first baitcaster combo(BPS special) I plan on using this for top water pike/musky/bass lures.

My fishing patterns are late April-May Trout fishing, May-Jun walleye/pike, June-Nov everything 60% LM Bass.

Thanks

MY PERSONAL FAVORITE IS POWER PRO 30LB BRAIDED LINE. ITS AS THIN AS AVERAGE 8LB LINE,YOU'LL BEND A HOOK BEFORE YOU BREAK A LINE.LINE IS VERY TOUGH YOU NEED A KNIFE OR I USE NAIL CLIPPERS TO CUT IT,YOU CAN'T BITE IT. LINE IS PROBOLBLY OVER KILL ON THE SMALLER FISH BUT PIKE AND BASS DON'T STAND A CHANCE.

Return the spiderwire original, that line is garbage. It breaks off and frays and everything in the book. Fireline is good been using that and I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the input Sharper, garbage you say...I'll try to find the reciept but I think I bought it last december if not I'll try it out and change it to fireline luckly I have more fireline(last bps sale) then Spiderwire. in the last few years I used spiderwire mono in 4,6,8,12#s line and they where pretty good only lost 1 bass due to line.

YO-YO-ITS-ME I will try power pro later this year 30# seems too much tho?, the highest I usually go is 14#s.

Isn't Fluorocarbon supposed to retain MORE memory than regular Mono?
Is why I don't use it on the entire spool.
I have 24" of 12lb VANISH as my leader though.

So you can use VANISH for the whole spool?

Thats what I thought but the Vanish I picked up came in a 250 yard spool($13), I was at le baron today and saw seagur(sp) had a 25 yard fluorocarbon leader and a 200 yard florocarbon main line for basically the same price.

It doesn't say anything on the package about to only use it as a leader. I guess the only way to find out is try to it. Worst case I guess is to keep the line fresh(cutting the first few feet 6-8ft) everytime I go fishing with it.

I prefer the power pro braid, and for bass or pike a 10lb or 12lb test is fine, unless you are in heavy weeds, doing alot of pitching and flipping. I also recommend the Seagar floro leader and it is suppose to be different than the regular Seagar floro line. 8lb test should be fine for most conditions, and for pike, a leader would be a good idea.

I used to use 6 & also 10 lb. Vanish for panfish/bass I liked it, but I ended changing over to Stren Magnathin since then. For the record tho, the original Berkley Vanish, is a type of fluorocarbon "main line" which is a 100% fluorocarbon "main" fishing line, not leader material. While Berkley does have Vanish Leader Spools for 50-100+ lb. vs Regular Vanish or Vanish Transistion, same deal with Seagar. Btw, the reason why fluoro is quite expensive is that it's imported straight from Japan.

Yes, Braid line does cost more but it also last longer. I think it is well worth the extra pennies.
Regardless what type of fish you are after... just put braid on every reels...
If you are fishing a fish that is sensitive to lines than just put some leaders on. If you get snagged and need to break the line, you'll atleast break it at the leader and not somewhere along the main line.(could be near the lure end... could be near the reel end...)

Power Pro all the way. Maybe? I use 30lb PP for bass and pike. The problem is the braid is 8lb Dia. meaning its less resisitant to abrasion to 30lb flouro, so what I do is use a flouro leader (Berkley stuff) in 14-20lbs. This way a pike will have a harder time cutting the line. I was bass fishing last year a caught a 15" pike and he shredding my 50lb power pro, if I was using flouro, I would have been ok.

Just my 2 cents,

Daniel

I can’t believe some of the line strengths you boys are posting ridiculous what are you fighting if it is a fight with that kind of line.

10lb is my main choice. 6lb is too weak, 8lb cast the best but 10 can handle any fish if your drag is set right and you actually want to feel the fish as opposed to just drag it in with your 50lb cable!

I was at BPS.There is met guy from Berkeley's.I asked them for suggestion on buying line. They gave me Fireline Crystal. As per they saying, this is the best line you can have right now.I also met bass tournament angler. He also recommended me this Fireline Crystal.I am using it and found out great. It will cost u around $20 for 150yd spool.thx

I had a feeling Berkely Vanish was more of a main line, since they had fluoro leader that was less yardage but same price or more. I guess I'll just use this and add a nice 6inch black leader for pike. If I find it good I'll get some 4-6# and try for trout.

Yes it is, I bought 3 spools when BPS had it on sale as well. go to lebaron.ca to see what they have on sale however from the looks of it some items on sale in the store are not on the web site.

I tend to use 10lb test line overall I find it more versatile and if you using your drag correctly you should be able to land most fish. I landed a 20+ lb salmon with my 10lb fireline crystal. Using drag properly and a med hvy rod you should be ok. If your targeting pike just attached a flouro or steel leader and your good to go.

I have just spooled 15lb test Power Pro Red on one of my Reels I will be trying this line this season. Supposedly the red color makes the line invisible in depths of 20 and more feet so it maybe ok for Walleye then again it could be a gimmick

I found this quote on another forum:

"Colors that you see are the colors that are refracted back. All other colors of the spectrum are absorbed. Hence red is RED.
Now the invisible part. Water is a different medium than air therefore light behaves different. The stuff in the water is absorbing wavelenghts too. Visible Light Deminishes. The longer wavelelengths in the red spectrum are absorbed more rapidly. Hence RED Disappears. Wink

RED HOOKS Catch fisherman.
Fish see Red hooks and Red line About the same.
Red does a disappearing act in the water.
Has nothing to do with "They Bite Red Better" but you will beleive the Marketing."

PS the line should not be too heavy unless you are fishing heavy cover (heavy lily pads etc) then you may need the 30 or 40 pounds or if you are going for musky. Other then that 10 to 15 lbs braid should be sufficient for most fishing applications.

So who here uses red hooks or lines? any feedback?
I must admit I have been tempted to redo all my crankbaits with red treble after reading how it helps.
