It appears that the GTA Pond Maps are on hold for the time being, so I've decided to start another project.

This is my idea ....
- create a map showing fishing spots in Ontario
- the map would be divided into different species, bodies of water, or both
- an angler would have to provide a minimum number of fishing spots to get access to the map (3, 5, 10 or whatever the consensus is)
- the map would be created as a KML file which can be read by Google Maps and Earth
- spots need to include the following:
- coordinates in lat/long (easily done with Google Maps)
- type of fish
- name of lake, river, or pond
- lures and baits used successfully

Anywho, let me know what you think or PM me if you would like to join.
I've included a small sample of what the bass map would look like.
Also, if you have any suggestions as to what info should be included for each spot feel free to reply.

i agree, this is a good idea. it will give people more options to try new spots. and hopefully spread out the fishing population...
i know of so many spots for alot of trout.... few pike... i also know where to go on the grand for all types of fishing...

how do we send you locations?? longatude, latitude numbers? eg, 43.4435N,28.2273 W ...

Figured I'd try and get this going again ... let me know if you are interested in sharing SM and LG bass locations!

i use to go to puslinch lake on my canoe but theres no access now so i just go to the grand river lots of spots u just gotta do some walking

Really bad idea...

Because some honest folks are gunna put up thier honey holes while others post fake spots... And take advantage of the honest people...

Giving out waypoints is a terrible idea...

General information about general areas/lake/rivers isn't bad...

But if you do this your gunna go to one of your holes one day to find 5 guys there already...

Then they tell friends...

Then you can't fish it anymore cause theres a boat there every day...all day...

Then it gets fished out...

Then your stuck trying to find a new spot...

My 2 cents...

I don't have any honey holes. but i could always be interested in this. It would take me a while to accses. I dont have much luck fishing, but i freaking LOVE it lol.

A user contributed database of general areas on popular lakes and rivers would be a cool idea. No need for specific spots. Half the fun is finding honey holes myself. It kinda feels like prospecting for gold. When I finally hit the fishy pay dirt it becomes my hole! MINE! YOU KEEP OFF YA HERE!

I agree ... I don't think anyone would want to give up their specific spots. It would be similar to the maps you can already get for most lakes.
They just don't come in a digital version. It would also be nice to add some rivers and ponds as well so the anglers in SW Ontario can get out and catch some bass without having to head out to the Great Lakes.

I had this idea a few months ago. A wiki-style map with info about what fish were produced under what conditions and presentation.

I'm all for it, there are people against this, but I'm for it. I think it's a great idea.

Kabes, do you have the know-how to program such a project? An online interface where users can enter variables and post them to the map would be needed. I certainly don't know how to do that :p

Yeah I'm a geographic information systems technician. I started it last fall but end of season wasn't the best time.
If anyone sends me at least three locations I will add them to the map and share the Google Maps link. I only have a few people signed up so far but you have to start somewhere right?
As far as creating user forms that anglers can upload their own points ... that's a much bigger project that involves the admins and some web design.

My 2 cents worth would be to gather lake/river/stream bottom formation/depth maps and attach those to respective bodies of water in Ontario. That way, nobody opens up the possibilty of outcompeting eachother for spots and fish populations could remain healthy enough to sustain life. This way, it would still take some skill to catch fish (because you would have to know the seasonal fish movements, weather, food source movement etc), but provide you with some of the useful knowledge needed to decide where to fish within the water body.

One website "anglersatlas" looks to do that and I like the site, but it needs more depth maps and people to do the mapping work (I think sonar is used and plotted on a graph similar to a fishfinder, but in a larger spatial context).
