So I was at a local fishing store and was talking about beads with one of the employees and he said technically using a bead with nothing on the hook is illegal since you fishing with a bare hook. Just wondering how you guys fish your beads, do you put anything on the hook or leave it bare?? love to hear your opinion on this.

I emailed the MNR at one time about this, they said the rig it's self is not prohibited but could be used in a prohibited way. I believe the law in BC is within 2 inches of the hook. Many people run between an inch and two inches. If you are using the bead bag combo then maybe a bit further. The bead can be attached to the line with otherwise a peg it, tooth pic or bead knot.

I know Mitch and jay personally the mnr officers for the east and no it is not illegal to use them but it is a thin line and there are many opinions if you are caught useing them in a snagging manner then you will be charged accordingly but that also goes towards all other baits or lures you use too but if the hook is on the outside of the fishes mouth even though the fish clearly hit your bead you must release the fish unharmed

Everyone will always have their own opinion on what is and isn't illegal. If you are sceptical about using beads and a bare hook 2" away, Toss a piece of worm or a roe bag on the hook ^

I just tied this setup for tomorrow's outting.
At first I didn't like the bead method when I first heard about it but after watching this vid, I don't find it that bad.

I can't remember where I read it, but there have been reports/rumours of people recently (past year) actually being charged for fishing the bead method. Can anyone confirm?

I have a few times, It sometimes kicks off this distinction. I think its often discover that the people charged were using them In a way that got them charged. I believe beef is correct.

just tell them your roe bag or worm fell of....how would they prove that?

I usually only use 8mm bead and roe bag...but sometimes I have used single bead, with tremendous success. Specifically a glow in the dark green 8mm dead with blod dot. I hooked around 9 fish in the mouth that day with just a single bead. However I find that i foul hook MORE fish with bead and roe since the roe bags add more weight, and therefore drift below or right on top the fish, causing the hook to get stuck in fins or body while drifting, pulling the float down.

The beads are so light, they float just above the fish, so i think its much harder to "snag"....depends on how your shots are set up anyways

twisting 3 tmies is enough i find...6 times may twist the line bad...its gunna be a little twisted anyway

I was fish a west trib last year and a co carded me so I pulled my line in and put it on the keep and he saw the double rig I was using with a bead with a bare hook 12-16 inches above my roe Baganda hook and all he said was that this setup has been deadly this year !! Nothing about it being illegal at all

please tell me if this is a snagging rig. i have a 3ft leader with bare hook - 2.5" bead above...and a wooly fly rigged below 16" below.
i have rigged 2 of these so far and the rest are similar but roe instead of flies. this will mainly be my setup on my new float gear. i'm going double rig on my first outing.

Beads are deadly! The regs here in AK is that the bead has to be 2" above the hook. We have an open season on some rivers to use beads. The Russian river comes to mind as you can bead fish it on August 21st. Before that it is illegal. During the salmon spawn here this rig is the main rig people use. From ordianry Joes to guides. Beads, beads, beads. Drives the purists nuts. I switch out between beads and flesh flies. Im no purist, I just enjoy catching fish.

Nice AK, so your more of a Xenie than a J.T.? (low and clear reference). I couldn't stand the way J.T. was looking down at Xenie for indicator/egg fishing.

On the bead note if that employee from the fishing store knows anything about the bead debate he should know his answer on the issue should be "no comment". From what ive read on various forums there is no conclusive evidence from any CO's that bead fishing is illegal and there is a bunch of posts from guys who talked to CO's who said its fine. The guys that got fined for using them were probably keeping snagged fish or there is some detail from the story that was missed. I wonder if there is one of those mini articles.

I tried finding one on their reports from 2012 but didn't come across anything. Here are a few goodies though.

^^ good to see something IS being done, at least sometimes. I know you can't catch them all, but this is nice to see

I finally caught my first using this rig. It was hooked in the mouth and I felt and saw the head shakes right away.

nice catch!

I got mine ALL on beads with either roe on the hook or those tiny crappie tube jigs ( chartreuse and orange )

Ha! I just saw that a few weeks ago. Purist to the extreme. Hell, I use beads and indicators at the same time! Do I always? No. But sometimes the water I am fishing calls for it. Beads I use all the time where there is a salmon spawn going on. If I am catching a bunch of fish on the bead I like to switch it up just to mix it up. If the method you catch fish is legal I have nothing to say. I just prefer to use a fly rod. Whether its using beads, nymphs, drys, whatever.
