I had an okuma Aventa for 3 full years and always liked itand never had much problem with it
I had used an Aventa off and on since 2010. Now my brother-in-law is learning on it.

I am trying to get him to skip the first cp and upgrading and wasting 50 or more in the process. that is if he even sells his first CP. all YOU people that OWNED the first okuma reel are carrying kingpins and islanders. there is a reason, just skip first year and dont buy okuma. buy once, buy right.

My worry was that I will not like it. Easier to take a 150-200 hit than a 350-400.

over all, the loss is exactly the same. % wise the loss is huge on the okuma. both resold lose about 50 in value. but islander sells a lot faster than okuma.

IMO, find a used reel that you won't lose money on the resale if you don't like it, ie: islander @ 250-275, raven matrix @ 100-125 and okuma sheffield @ 125-150

Paul...I picked up an R-Type Rapala for $120 2 years ago I think...lol..could have been a year..I lose track! I've beat the crap out of it and landed quite a few fish with it...and still like it. Start up is decent even in very slow moving water. Much as I think other reels are very "pretty" and would love to have one...my better 1/2 would beat the crap out of me if I spent a lot of money on a reel unless I could justify it to her...and she is no dummy...lol...she's in IT so will research the crap out of it.

Finessing purchases past the better half is the toughest part of steelheading/addiction.Spend the extra quid, because goshdarnit you deserve it! a better reel has better resell as previously pointed out and by the lack of Islanders that lanquish in the classifieds

The reel doesn't catch fish. An R-Type will catch more fish in the hands of a good angler than an Islander will in the hands of a hack. If you know how to present a bait and read water the fish don't care what is on the end of your rod. Sorry to disappoint all the equipment snobs out there, but that is the bottom line.

X2

JDean, don't think anyones arguing that higher end reels catch more fish, but I do find with some other gear, u really get what you pay for.

Pretty hard to.catch fish when your line keeps going between the spool and backplate, or when the thumbscrew for the spool falls out. I recommended a reel in the same price range as the vortex
I had the line issue with my aventa but not the raw.

TroutCommanders right, all the okuma reels are practically the same just, just with different spokes on the spool, the okuma aventa was actually a copy of the raven sst reel.
