Hey guys:

Question for your considered response--want to know what you take to be a premium factory float rod and why. I know much has to do with personal preference as anything, but let me know.

G. Loomis GLX (I've fished on the fly before--rod got immersed a few times during January steelheading...fish on and the upper portion exploded...ooops)
Loomis IMX (though they have stopped making a 13 foot stick)
Rainshadow
Raven RV9 or IM (find the IM's heavy)

??????

THANKS

Ive been cuising around kijiji and seen a rainshadow with what looks like a broken tip also a rv9 with a cracked reel seat.....there is a lot of stuff out there now. Im looking for a rod also to match 5 inch stanton any ideas ? I was thinking 17 ft streamside or 15ft okuma

HOLY crap GB!!
Maybe you're right--it is a young man's game (17 footer--that's a long stick to be wielding all day).

I couldnt even imagine using a Rod of that length.....

*SMILES*

However, did interest me to actually look online to see who does.

Seems to be the "Craze" in the UK & Europe

To each theri own!

it would be for fishing pools where i run10+ ft under my float ...i think a longer rod would help on those hooksets, i have a 13 for working around sticks and under bridges.

I currently use two sticks for steelhead.

13'6" Diamondback custom

13'6" Raven RV9.

The DB is softer and I loved it compared to my older 13' Streamside which I thought was way too whippy.

The RV9 was a recent purchase for me and it definitely has more backbone and was a great rod to use for larger pools/longer drifts.

I can see a 15' rod being very useful depending on the situation.

Too bad there's no one rod that is perfect for every scenario :(
That's why we go poor buying fishing gear.

In terms of answering your q ChaseChrome, I find the RV9 to be an excellent factory rod. Very light and crisp.
But at the same time, I haven't been steelheading long enough to try very many factory rods.

Oh yeah, I'm not a fan of sliding rings and I believe the RV9 doesn't have a fixed reel seat option as far as I know. I could be wrong.

I also find the guides on the Raven rods to be on the small side and very fragile.

I will be retying the ones on mine this winter I hope.

I've only seen the sliding rings on the RV9, but you could by the blank and have the seat installed. Available at Centrepin Angling for 240.00.

I fished with most of the rods on the market.. I do prefer my GLoomis over all of them.
I am especially attached to my 13" GL2.. It's so dam strong!

I did pick up a 15" GLX over the holiday's and mated it with a KP Imperial.. It will come in handy for the larger rivers.
-I absolutely dig these REC Ti Recoil Guides. I am actually going to have my 13" GL2 stripped and setup with these guides.

I have the RV9 also and Its a good rod, just a step behind my IMX. Its only available with rings. I've heard from many people they dislike rings. Is there a particular reason? I have rods with fixed seats and some with rings. If wrapped properly, I find the rings just as comfortable. Its just the hassle of wrapping it but when you have the right balance, it basically stays all season.

Yup, that's what I figure Snoop

I take my pin off and put it in its case and also put my 3 piece 13'4 rod in its case as well. Im assuming those that dont like the rings must do something similar and it would be a hassle taking the tape off every time.

My rods have sliding rings, which I tape in place, When I'm moving on the river I put the neoprene case on the reel. I do have a case that will take both the reel and the rod. Rods with fixed reel seats are for anglers that know where they want their reel situated and they claim the extra weight in the butt end makes the tip seem lighter, which makes sense to me. Some day I will have to try a float rod with a fixed reel seat, but I truly couldn't tell a rod maker where I would like it placed on the rod.

^I have always taken my rods to be fitted with reel seats and to have them properly balanced.. You would be surprised how much of a difference it will make.

When using sliding rings, I would normally affix the lower seat to the preferred position with a good amount of sticky tape.. Then I would add enough tape to the upper ring, to ensure that the reel would sit in place and not move around when fighting a fish.
When you want to store it, simply remove the tape from the top ring, remove reel and place it in it's case.

Has anyone fished a Tangent?
They look well made with SIC fuji guides and a reasonable price
AND
made in Canada!

I haven't had one in my hands so I.m curious....
