The thrill of opener is just killing me, it is only a couple of days away, but AHHH!! I wanted to talk about best opener stories because I wanted to keep my mind busy, so I do not go insane from waiting.
Opener 2010:
It was my second year fly fishing and last year, I killed it on opener, which shocked me. My buddies and I went to the creek and we fished all day, but the creek I fish was horrible. There were way too many people, the water was shallow, and the weather was way too hot. I was running on an empty stomach all day and zero hours of sleep, I was furious. I kept losing fish because my line would be tangled with another fisherman's line when I had a fish on. Also, my friend stepped on my brand new G-Loomis and chipped the cork... I thought the fishing gods were laughing at me.The entire day I kept losing fish, finally, I decided to fish another spot that seemed completely dry because there were no fisherman and even with my glasses, I could not see anything, but it was pretty deep. I decided to stop fishing an egg pattern and use about a size 12 prince head nymph. After a couple of casts, I had a fish and being too excited, the hook popped out. Even though I lost it, I knew this hole would be promising. I keep drifting, until I pick up my line and there is a fish. Finally, I had a fish on my line and it seemed like a decent three pound fish, until I seen it was a beautiful resident brown. I made sure I was not going to lose that, it took me all the way down, until it gave up. The feeling of catching my first brown, uhh, words could not describe how I felt. Everything that happened all day did not matter any more, that brown trout was the highlight of my openers. Even though I have fished openers where I would be catching fish almost every drift, that brown is never going to be forgotten. Obviously, I took some pictures and let it swim for another day.
