So I bought a fly rod and reel from a tackle shop that was closing a few years back and when I got it home and tested it about two months later when spring came around i realized that the reel seat doesnt fit into the clamp on the rod. the metal on the seat is too thick to fit into the cork opening on the rod. What is the solution for this? Is my only option to gring the reel down or would it make more sense to have my rod customized? Or did I just by the wrong reel to go with that rod? I didnt know jack about fly fishing back then and I still dont know much about it now so any advice is appreciated.

I wouldn't grind the reel seat down, instead I would tape the reel in position until I was able to find a better solution.

Any solutions guys? I dont think I would want to tape a fly reel down as there is much more whipping going on with a fly rod and I just dont like the taping thing too much.

I thought there must have been guys on the board that went through the same thing? Are custom fly rods not very popular? Can anyone recommend a good place to get custom work done in Waterloo Region?

Hey Nado

I was just checking the topics and found this. You got any pics of the rod seat and your reel foot? How much space you need to get that reel on? Did you eventually get it to fit? Are the rod and reel expensive?

Ill try to remember to take some pics when I get home today. They aren’t overly expensive, new they would probably be worth somewhere in the range of 80-120 each. I got them as a present so im not entirely sure. The rod is st croix and the reel is pflueger. The seat of the reel is just too tick to fit into the slot on the rod. I can get the rubber piece around the back end but the top end wont slide into the cork. I thought about grinding it down as I read someone here did that or another option I thought of was modifying the cork somehow or getting a custom cork done. Not sure which way to go.

grind the reel foot with a dremel, you only need 1/4 inch on each side, keep checking if it fits often.

Thanks Efka. That sounds like the easiest and most cost effective fix. I guess I just needed someone to confirm that was the best idea lol. I will repair sometime and post some before and after pics when its done.

Nado .... was looking for the latest FLY THREAD to post this little tidbit I had saved a couple weeks ago.
All fun intended!

FUNNY

IMO if you're serious about using that combo then take efka's advice and grind the reel

lol Blair.

Rain-Bow I was going to take Efka's advice but I think I might go a different route now. I could maybe look into turning the 8.5' rod into a custom float rod for smaller creeks and sell the reel or maybe just sell both. I have an 8wt st croix combo that should do the job for me just fine for fly fishing.
