Hi all. Sounds weird but I love the look of the fly reels. Can they be popped onto a rod in place of a spincast and used in a similar fashion? I do not expect the same feeling at all as a plain old spin caster but just want to know if I am out to lunch on this idea. Thanks.

Yes you can attach the reel to the rod, however it will not work for you as a spinning reel.

Oh, no free spool option..... never have used a fly before so I did not know this but that definitely would not work. *lol* Thanks for the replies.

only way is to get a fly reel with an visible clicker style drag--that can be removed--then you will have free spinning--better idea--get into fly fishing altogether -

I used to frequently use a scientific anglers disc drag fly reel loaded with mono to bottom bounce for trout, it is an excellent short range tool combined with an 11.5 foot rod. You will not get a cast out of it though, you would strip enough line, lob it out, drift the run and then strip and lob again. It was nice as you never had line being caught on the handle as you would with a spinning reel. I mainly float fished however, but every so often I brought out the bottom rig and gave her hell! I should probably do it agin sometime! So, yes it can be done, but it's very situation specific!
