I am going to purchase an eight weight fly rod but don't know whether to get an 11 foot switch rod or 10 foot rod. I personally never fish with two handed rods and I was wondering if an 11 foot switch rod would be too long for smaller creeks. I have been fly fishing for 3 years now with single handed rods and I am just wondering if you think it would be better for me to get a switch rod.

Personally, I like the switch rod better.

I wish I could be of help for yeah, I never knew there was 2 handed fly rods set up, I just took up Fly Fishing this year, and Ive only been out twice now, its tricky and im still learning as I go.

Hey mister freeze, I have a 8 weight 11ft. Switch rod and I love it. You have to remember though when deciding which rod to get. That a 8 weight Switch rod is actually a heavier setup than a 8 weight single hand. The 8 wt switch rod fly line is almost like a 12 weight single hand line. But because its a double hand rod. You wont even notice it.

I mainly fish credit and humber, so the setup works well for me. Dont know about smaller creeks.

Hope that helps.

I never knew that but I fish big rivers for mainly salmon like credit, humber and ganaraska but for steelhead I fish small creeks. I think I should go with the switch rod, because if i don't like two handed casting I can just change it. Also, have you ever caught any steelhead on your rod. Does it have a nice bend? I have a 6 weight loomis at home for rainbows, browns, specks and bass and I had an eight weight but broke it last year to a salmon, that's why I am purchasing another one for the salmon run and winter steelhead run

I have a 8wt temple fork outfitters swich rod. It does have a nice bend to it. For salmon it does real well but for steelhead a little too strong. Still nice bend though.

Thats sucks about the broken rod. I usually dont go over 8 lbs test tippet so my line breaks before my rod has a chance to. But also loose ferrule can cause the breakage also.

Would you recommend a 7 weight switch rod instead? Also, I got the rod for $15, it was the second fly rod I got, I got it because I spent a lot on a vintage hardy fly rod. So, I decided to get a cheap rod for salmon and trout until it breaks. It did me really good for the price got a 14 pound steelhead on it and a 30 pound salmon broke it. Even though it was an 8 weight it still gave amazing fights when dealing with the 5-8 pound steelhead, I even got a 2 pound brookie and he gave me a nice fight.

Yes definetly 7 wt will do just fine. Personnely I like a little more muscle in my rods because I dont want to fight the fish to long. It can really exhaust the fish n I like to release.

Also like your situation. You landed a nice steelhead no prob but dang salmon broke your rod.

If money wasnt an issue, I would have one rod for each species : )

But right now gotta have one to handle salmon n steely. Whatever you decide, Fishing is awesome no matter what. $15 rod or $1000.
