so i'm in the back country doing a bit of fishing in the summer and the water is looking a bit dirty with out boiling the water to drink it whats the best water filtration system out there??

I've had good experiences with the Life Straw, simple and I've never got sick. Used only on short excursions, just plunk in the water for 10 minutes to activate the filter and drink. I will say it was also used in water from shield lakes in Ontario. Watch some Youtube videos on them....gross

When I'm up north, I'll often drink water straight from the lake, especially if I'm crossing lakes on the SUP which can amount to a full day of paddling. It tastes quite good!

I won't drink water from Lake Ontario, but I have gulped down my fair share of Lake Huron water.

My general rule of thumb these days, is that I won't eat a fish from freshwater if I wouldn't drink the water, and vice versa.

If you're going to start drinking straight from the source start with small sips first before you go with full out gulps, start with Spring and work you're way into the summer type thing. People drink straight from lakes without getting sick but there is always a chance of picking up some nasties during the summer, albeit quite small.

As for filtration, I've got a Life Straw Personal water filter and after a seasons use it has become VERY difficult to suck water through it. This becomes a pain when you're feeling tired or have a morning headache from the night before. My next purchase will be a SAWYER mini with a squeezable pouch - affordable and small. If you're looking for something larger there are some great gravity filters out that produce lots of clean water fast.
