So I saw some frog fishing vids last year and I was HOOKED. Immediately went out and bought one lol

I was wondering if you guys know any good places to fish with frogs on land. I'm talking about fishing heavy vegetation with lily pads and such.

A PM would be appreciated. I wouldnt want exact locations or secret spots and do not mind exploring.

This is what I caught last year on my second cast with the frog

I'd love to see some frog pics from you guys =D

I think those pics are the same pike.

And not a frog pic, but while going through my photobucket looking for the frog pics, I stumbled across many gems, including this resi brown! Pic doesn't do it justice - it had what I would describe as sunrise or sunset colouration with its deep orange back, with gold mixed in, fading to a white belly.

Don't know why... Have frogs, use them a bunch and I get so many hits off of them and I love it..

ONLY problem is, I can't gettem in the net. As soon as I set the hook, the frog comes out of their mouth

I've tried soft hook sets, huge ones... waited until the bass starts taking off.

I DON'T GET IT

I read something about that previously, BnK. Try bending the hooks out a bit and i think that should help with the hook sets.

What works best for me fishing them in pads or heavy cover is waiting like 2-3 seconds before hitting a homerun with the hookset.. I use a heavy action abu garcia veracity rod.. Paired up with an abu garica rocket baitcaster with 50lb spiderwire stealth.. Key is a hard hookset with the right gear for the job

I also trim the legs of the frog so they are just a little shorter than the body of the frog.. It stops the fish from short hitting the bait.. And will grab the whole frog.. If they miss it and you haven't reeled your line back in.. Just let the frog sit there.. Twich it a lil.. Most of the time the fish will come back for it..if not have the senko rod ready to throw back into the same hole or pocket

It's definitely a very fun way to fish, anything topwater is great.

I suppose if they were dressed with two trebles like many lures, hooking up wouldn't be as much of an issue. But then they wouldn't be weedless, and wouldn't be as rewarding when you finally do hook up.

Swinging poppers is great. Basically anywhere along a shore line in the early morning, evening and overcast days bass usually stack up along the shore waiting for frogs to jump into the water. Smallies on the grand and other tribs are amazing for a live target popper. And usually most fish that hit top water are big and can give at a good show jumping in the air and pulling line.

The soft floating frogs that have the hidden hooks on the rear again live target so you can cast it on heavy vegetation without getting snags. I find can be difficult to use you have to let the fish take it in for 2 seconds or so then high stick your rod to set the hooks up inside it's mouth. I have lost tons of largies due to issues of the hooks not setting properly. Takes lots of practise to get down.

Learning the hook-set on the top-water frog was very frustrating for me. My tally is at 1 pulled in fish out of about 7 bites. 1 pike jumped off the hook right near the shore and the rest are either short hitting the frog or spitting them out after the fight begins. It's still fun .... but I've got to work on my ratio.

Frog fishing is awesome. I used to havethe same problem that BnK had and the problem was that I was using a mh spinning outfit. It didn't have enough power to set the hook properly. I switched to a heavy power st. Croix premier and its a world of difference.

I dont have a lot of experience catching frog fishing but Ive found some interesting things to increase hook up ratios

1) cutting the tails short to prevent short strikes
2) making one tail longer than the other for walking the frog
3) bending hooks out of frogs body
4) putting rattles in the body of the frog
5) always squeezing the frog before casting
6)have a sideways sweeping motion when hook setting

What do you guys think of these? the rattles sound interesting lol

I wouldnt cut the the one tail shorter then the other or leg I should say.. An easy walk the dog motion can be accomplished by tying a loop knot.

If you guys want my frog tip, look at the River2Sea Ish Monroe poppin phattie frogs. They are built so that you can take them right out of the case and toss them. always a couple twists you can do like bend the hooks a little or snip the tail but I like a longer tail.

Some nice fish on those frogs.

Salmotrutta, how big is that gnarly looking pike? It looks like a dandy.
Average for that spot (it's a Lake O marina). It's actually not a very big one, around 3lbs, 5 at the most. Very productive spot.

Nothing special but today I caught my first bass of the season on a frog...

It was caught on a Floating Slop Frog and this bait is amazing. Its completely weedless and snag proof.

I've even bombed it over in a bunch of reeds on the other side of the shore and I was still able to pull it out of it(numerous times too).
