Great article. Almost lost me at the beginning as I laughed out loud when I read the line "They determined that the least intrusive way to capture the fish was, well, the same way we do it. With a fly rod." I could almost feel the ego ooozing out of that line. Maybe single barbless is the best way to go but whether you do it with a fly, pin or spinning setup its the exact same effect. If I am releasing the fish i'm always either grabbing the leader or using the net but I had no idea the risk of head trauma was so high. I would guess the results of their research is exaggerated or there is some other factor at play but still a good piece of information to keep in mind.

I rarely find any dead steelies... This info could be a bit biased, and additionally, I don't think great lakes chromers are as threatened.

I bet it benefits the fish to be caught on the fly. Lol

Well the article is sort of biased. There's no link to the study or details on what really determined the faith of the fish; just "fly fishing is the best". Steelhead have been known to get caught several times and still survive. Just gotta keep them in the water as much as possible (and not tire them out).

If you fish for salmon in Nfld you are only allowed to keep the relatively small ones. A few years back when the printed page was still king, fishermen liked to send in 'bragging pix' of the big salmon they had caught and released to be published in the mag.published by the provincial salmon fishing assoc. The mag made it their policy not to publish any photos of fish if their belly was out of the water. I think of this as the 'gold standard', something to aspire to. I admit to not adhering to that practice as my pic for the Geen outing demonstrates, but maybe OFF can take the lead and follow a similar policy. Maybe it would encourage all of us to treat the fish more gently.
