Shall we call this the ‘Judy and Terry Ruttle Memorial Tournament’? No, they haven’t gone to the Big Bass Pond in the sky, but our perennial entrants, and almost perennial winners, were absent this year. Some sort of conflict, hope to see you again next year J&R! (I may not be speaking for all participants there, they make for formidable competition!)

The violent weather the night before probably had an impact on numbers, but 16 teams ventured forth at the 8am blastoff to do battle with bass. And all but one team returned at 3pm for the weigh-in. Kim and Kevin Hall caught the biggest fish of the day, a 36” muskie, but since this is a bass tournament I ain’t counting it unless one of them has the courage to ‘lip it’ instead of using a cradle/net.

1st place, with a total weight of 13.35lbs, went to Jen and Barry McCrackin, and among their 5 fish was also the biggest of the day, a 4.20lb smallmouth. In 2nd was local hero Cheryl Kennedy and husband Pat, with 10.85lbs. Natalie and Mike Buziak made our imaginary podium this year, with a 3rd place weight of 9.40lbs. Newcomers Wendy and Mike Ricciardi took 4th with 8.80lbs, and Nicole and Craig Gardiner rounded out the winners with 8.10lbs.

If not for Jen McCrackin’s big fish it would have come down to a coin toss (or maybe an arm wrestle) between Paiten Smolen and Brittany Howe, both of whom brought back a big fish of 3.20lbs. Thanks for clearing that up, Jen!

To all participants, thank you for turning out. As I told everyone there, it had been a bit hectic in the days leading up to this, with a couple of very important family matters that had to be taken care of, one literally at the last minute. As a result of those I was without any assistance for the day, and I am glad that everyone seemed to proctor themselves in accordance with the rules and the spirit of a fun day on the water. It also meant that I was unable to take any photos, but getting the details correct is more important.

My thanks to Haliburton RPM, it’s a great facility, and Alan and the crew were able to work around us without either of us noticing the other.

And a big thank you to Mark Kulik, head honcho at Xzone Lures, his donation of prizes was most welcome. Some entrants were not familiar with the product, those who were had smiles on their faces like Christmas morning when I presented them with a bag of Slammers as they turned up for the day. These are quality baits that have become well known on the tournament circuit, look for them at your local tackle shop and if they don’t stock them, ask them to.
