Hi everyone, Im new here and just had a few questions for everyone.... My girlfriend and I just moved up to Sioux Lookout in northern Ontario and want to get into ice fishing as well as fishing when the lakes open up. Now I've always been just a hunter and the last time I went fishing was probably about 8 years ago just catching minnows in the creek near my farm.

I was wondering if you fine folk would be able to help me out with what would be some good gear to get started with?

Also I know you need a fishing liscence but do you need an out of doors card as well?

Thanks in advance,

Welcome aboard southpaw!

The Outdoors Card is actually what you will need to get. The fishing lisence is a tag that gets affixed to the back indicating the year and class of permit. Talk to your local retailer and they will expalin in greater detail.

I'm not that experienced in ice-fishing, nor any good lol, so I'll allow others to chime in on this point.

When open-water seasons comes, since you are located in the North, best bet is to head over to CTC and pick up a 7foot medium power spinning combo. Spool it with6-8lbs mono or flouro and get a variety of jigs, plastics, perhaps even some medium sized spoons and spinners. Better yet, a simple hook, a couple of split shot and a bobber to hold some night crawlers is a good option.

Remember you are just starting up, so no need to break the bank and buy really expensive gear. Caveat Empor, Buy what you can afford and you can always upgrade in the future.

Best of luck! You're living in God's country with many great fishing opportunities all around.
